Organised by the Blessed Minority Christian Fellowship (BMCF), an inter-denominational Christian community in Hong Kong, the 3-day Amplify Conference comprised workshops and lectures about Christian ministry as well as the role Christians and churches play within the wider LGBT community and LGBT activism. Over 300 attendees from Australia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and the United States attended the conference that ended on Sunday.

Rev Miak Siew, an openly gay pastor from Singapore’s Free Community Church who conducted a workshop titled “Fuel for the journey: The Journey of Social Justice, Serving God and Others”, said that the conference is very significant for the Christian LGBT community as well as the wider Christian community as a whole.

He told Fridae in an interview: “It’s really amazing and encouraging to see so many people to come together for a conference like this one. It’s the first few steps to healing and reconciling our faith and sexuality.”

He added that many who attended the conference are in leadership positions and are well-positioned to affect change within their communities and beyond.

The conference was attended by representatives of LGBT and inclusive churches, and openly gay pastors from the region including Rev Elias Tseng who became the first ordained gay pastor in Taiwan and Malaysian-born, US-based Rev Oyoung Wen Feng.

At the Amplify Conference Plus press conference held on Sunday afternoon, 18 pastors and clergy from the region issued a declaration to urge the HK government to protect the rights of sexual minorities and to enact anti-discrimination laws on the grounds of sexual orientation. It has been a contentious issue as equality activists and Christian groups, who oppose the introduction of anti-discrimination laws, have clashed publicly over the proposed bill.

Rev Silas Wong, head of the BMCF, said that many people have misunderstood the nature of Christian faith and they are afraid of or have left their church because of the anti-gay values propagated by some." He told Fridae that he hopes that through the Amplify Conference Plus the community can demonstrate its support for gay equality to the Hong Kong government, and to the LGBT community that "true Christian belief is accepting of all including LGBT believers" and that it supports social justice.

Rev Oyoung, who was at the centre of controversy on several occasions after coming out as the first openly-gay pastor from Malaysia several years ago, criticised the churches that have created a culture of homophobia and urged LGBT Christians to find a church that would accept them. “Leave the church if they are homophobic unless you stay there and speak up for GLBT rights,” he was quoted as saying in Apple Daily.

For a religion (aka, man-made institution) that supposed to put Love as it's core message, I pray that more of today's and future church leaders' heart, mind and spirit be open to the essence of love and acceptance..

I'm not of the same faith but keep up the good fight for gay equality and against ignorance and prejudice. We need all hands on deck especially with the anti-gay Christian brigade popping up everywhere, you all must continue to work from within.

No matter what it is still good to hear this.

Good to see this, the churches are otherwise so absurdly homophobic in Asia. It's a shame because some of them do good work. Others just feather the nest of their pastor, exploiting the gullibility and prejudices of their audiences.
