Japanese firm recognises gay marriage

Japanese TV shopping channel operator to offer same benefits to gay employees who marry as their straight counterparts.

Oak Lawn Marketing, which operate the Shop Japan TV shopping channel, will extend bonus and vacation leave to gay employees who register their same-sex marriage.

By offering 30,000 Yen and six days leave the company, whose chief executive is from the US, is matching the congratulatory benefits it offers straight couples.

The move comes after two Tokyo wards, Shibuya and Setagaya both announced plans to begin issuing certificates recognising same-sex partnerships later this year.

In an online statement, the company said it is committed to "promoting diversity to make it possible for each and every employee to demonstrate their abilities and shine to the maximum extent rather than demarcating people by gender or race."

Oak Lawn Marketing, INC., a NTT DOCOMO, INC. group company founded in 1993, is an omni-channel brand response company that operates the Shop Japan brand which offers products under the concept of "enriching lifestyles worldwide."

The company will also offer condolence money if a partner dies.

Not "who's chief executive is...". "Whose chief executive is..."

What about single people? What about those in non sexual relationships?

Seems like a gimmick to me, chasing the pink pound

Re GTiLad: Be a cynic all you want. These people are taking a step forward to accept diversity and you call it a gimmick. Only two small wards (not even one whole city) out of a country so many times bigger than Singapore has legalised same sex partnerships, how much of a gimmick can they make? In fact they risk angering the straight majority who are the bulk of their consumers.

Consumers care very little about company's employees.

And fashion following gays are the worst offenders.

Being cynical is my job. I'm an engineer.

Equality for all. At least be on the road to that or don't bother.

How can you offer married benefits to single people, GT Lad? And those in non-sexual relationships can still register a marriage. Take this for what it is: a major step forward in Equality in Japan. We should be praising companies such as these - and if you have to be cynical at least be intelligent with it.

Co-habiting siblings can't marry just as one example.

Why should married couples benefit over single people?

If it's about helping / promoting the upbringing of kids then do that.

I see you're in the UK jerome. Did you know we still don't recognise homosexual acts under our legal system? This means a gay man can't divorce if his partner sleeps around unlike straight marriages. So, you can scream for equality all you want, just check the details and you'll see it can bring inequality if you aren't careful.

sigh...

I guess the facts and details can be tiresome
