Hong Kong hits back after MTR bans LGBT advert

Protesting City residents shared photos of themselves holding hands, hugging and kissing on public transport.

Citizens of Hong Kong took to social media this week after it emerged an advert featuring a same-sex couple had been banned from the city’s Mass Transit Railway (MTR) and airport. Hong Kong’s largest airline, Cathay Pacific, last week launched an LGBT-inclusive advertisement as part of its rebranding efforts. A poster at the airline’s headquarters shows two men holding hands on a beach with “Move beyond labels” written underneath.
However, the South China Morning Post then revealed that the advert had been banned by the MTR, as well as by the Airport Authority. Whereupon, Hong Kong’s latest LGBT group, Hong Kong Marriage Equality, launched a ‘move beyond discrimination’ campaign, with legendary LGBT rights campaigner and lesbian billionaire Gigi Chao kicking off the campaign with an MTR ‘selfie’.

Is Hong Kong society still so far behind the times?

What times? Perhaps if you knew a bit more about Asian culture in general and Hong Kong's in particular - especially in relation to the British and Chinese relationship over a century and a half - that comment would seem pretty foolish!
