The Motorcycle Diaries

Director: Walter Salles

Language: Spanish with English subtitles

Starring: Gael Garcia Bernal, Rodrigo de la Serna

Screening: 2004-09-28

Although Gael Garcia Bernal is supremely cute and a huge star in
Latin America, he's never been deemed pin-up-worthy by gay audiences.
Maybe he's too rough around the edges for our refined gay tastebuds
— sort of like Antonio Banderas and Russell Crowe.

Still, he delivers a strong performance as a young Ernesto Guevara
— who will later become the communist icon Che Guevara —
in the critically-acclaimed The Motorcycle Diaries.

The movie, which won a few awards at this year's Cannes Film Festival,
follows the motorcycle journey of Ernesto and his buddy in their
student years over the vast landscape of South America. The experience
helped Ernesto shape his revolutionary ideas.

Lyrical, profound and exquisitely shot by cinematographer Eric
Gautier, it offers the most sumptuous and satisfying movie-going
experience of the week.
