This seems to be a good week for comedy lovers, with plenty of
light-hearted fare clamoring for your wallet and attention.
Now, if you're the sort of homo who watches movies with her/his
parents, we would suggest that you take them to either Saving
Face or Mapado. Mapado isn't a gay movie
at all, but it was a big hit in South Korea when it debuted in Seoul
earlier this year. The reason for its box-office success had to
do with the huge numbers of female senior citizens who swarmed to
the cinemas to see it.
Mapado is a breezy comedy about two men (Lee Moon-sik
and Lee Jeong-jin) who travel to the tiny island of Mapa to catch
a thief who stole a winning lottery ticket. The island is inhabited
by only middle-aged women, so the sudden appearance of the two eligible
men has the effect of getting the women's hormonal engines running
again. All manner of slapstick hilarity ensues, before all's well
that ends well.
Definitely a movie to bring your Mum and Granny to, if they don't
mind reading subtitles.
