Nanny Mcphee

Director: Kirk Jones

Starring: Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Kelly Macdonald, Angela Lansbury, Imelda Staunton

Screening: 2006-03-07

Yes, most dykes and dandies do not have kids, and fewer still dream
of having kids. So a film title like Nanny McPhee starring
Emma Thompson and seven unruly children is unlikely to draw much
LGBT interest. The film itself is not that bad, however. In fact,
some might find it rather enjoyable.

Emma, who adapted the script herself from a children book series,
plays a hideous-looking nanny who is hired to help hapless single
father Mr Brown (Colin Firth) with his uncontrollable kids. With
a little magic, she teaches them to listen, share, co-operate, tidy
up and all the other values you are taught in Sesame Street.
Not only that, Nanny McPhee also helps Mr Brown look for a new wife.

The kids are naughty but charming, while the adult cast list reads
like a who's who of British actors. Award-winners Emma and Colin
are joined by other acclaimed actors like Imelda Staunton, Kelly
Macdonald, Derek Jacobi and Angela Lansbury in supporting roles.
Still, this supernanny-to-the-rescue concept just feels so old.
One cannot help feeling that one would rather be watching The
Sound of Music
or Mary Poppins.
