Tristan & Isolde

Director: Kevin Reynolds

Starring: James Franco, Sophia Myles, Rufus Sewell, David Patrick O'Hara

Screening: 2006-04-04

Before Romeo and Juliet, there was a legendary star-crossed couple
called Tristan and Isolde who lived circa 500 AD. Irish princess
Isolde (Sophia Myles) finds British warrior Tristan (James Franco)
lying wounded on a beach, and secretly nurses him back to health.
They fall feverishly in love, even though they know that they belong
to warring factions.

Directed by Kevin Reynolds, Tristan and Isolde is a largely
old-fashioned and uninspired epic romance. The script by Dean Georgaris
is well-structured but some of the film's key lines ('We both know
our love cannot be', 'Oh God, what have I done?') are shamefully
corny.

The movie, however, is greatly boosted by Sophia Myles' luminous
presence and beauty. She may be the only reason to watch this otherwise
skippable movie. Lesbians would be entranced by her, as would some
gay men.
