If you are a longtime viewer of LGBT films, you would have seen
many coming-out-of-the-closet dramas and gay-friendly musicals.
But here is something you may have never seen: a truly original
LGBT murder-mystery.
Indeed, if Agatha Christie were a lesbian, the novel that she would
probably write is Where the Truth Lies. This fascinating
story of sex, lies, ambition and confused sexual orientation is
as engaging a whodunit as one could ever be.
The lovely Alison Lohman plays an investigative reporter who is
searching for the truth behind the murder of a young woman 20 years
ago. Her naked corpse was found in a hotel room, and Alison suspects
that a famous showbiz duo (Kevin Bacon and Colin Firth) is directly
responsible for her death. But the men are no fools, and the closer
Alison gets to the truth, the greater the danger she finds herself
in.
Directed by Atom Egoyan, a prolific Canadian arthouse director,
this film boasts strong performances from Alison, Colin and Kevin.
Alison comes off as a back-baring Nancy Drew with heels and a bisexual
streak, while Colin and Kevin play their sexual ambiguities with
skill and aplomb.
Dark, disturbing and devilishly complex, Where the Truth Lies
is first-rate LGBT entertainment. Don't miss it.
