Fancy names like Channing Tatum, Jenna Dewan, Drew Sidora and Damaine Radcliff (which also come with fancy faces and bods) seem to suggest that you are about to witness an original, cutting-edge kind of coolness. Well, it turns out Step Up is a step-down from the dozens of dance films that have come before it, from Fame to Dirty Dancing to Save the Last Dance.
Tatum (a former Abercrombie & Fitch model) plays a sexy delinquent who is caught vandalizing the school for performing arts. The school punishes him by making him perform janitorial duty every afternoon, but this is precisely how he gets to meet the sexy Jenna. Conveniently, she asks him to help her out with her dance routines.
Of course, being the bad boy, he knows a few hip-hop moves which she can use to inject her routine and make it funkier. They fall in love, argue about how they are wrong for each other, blah blah blah, and then they kiss and make up and dance the final dance in a burst of colors, energy, hormones and extras.
It's all very predictable, but it must be said that the Channings, Jennas, Sidoras, Damaines and Marios of this movie really can move their booties. Still a cheaper way of entertaining yourself with slick dance moves is to stay home and catch So You Think You Can Dance? On TV.
