Jim Carrey to David Letterman: "We haven't grown at all, have we?"

On the Late Show with David Letterman to promote his upcoming film I Love You Phillip Morris, Jim Carrey called out the host for asking whether he worried that playing a gay character would hurt his leading man image.

Right after Jim Carrey’s demonstration of "undressing" the host with his eyes as an example of what the actor had taken from his gay role in comedy-drama I Love You Phillip Morris, David Letterman asked Carrey: "And, in terms of a leading man, a heterosexual playing a homosexual, do homosexuals say ‘well, that shouldn’t have been a homosexual’ or do you worry about your image as a heterosexual leading man playing a homosexual?"

Carrey replied: "Boy, we haven’t grown at all, have we? We haven’t grown at all…. We’re still children in the schoolyard. Honestly. No offense Dave, for god’s sakes, have you ever seen a gay man? Are there gay people in Indiana? Is it ok to be gay there, is what I’m asking. There's not a policy against gay people there or here?"

I Love You Phillip Morris, which co-stars Ewan McGregor and is based on a true story, will finally receive a US release on December 3 after it has opened in Europe, Asia and other parts of the world this year.

wot a larf... howllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll... I needed that... there is some positive stuff happening huh! (;-)) along with that gorgeous 14 yr US Gay lad Graham Taylor who spoke up in support of a suspended teacher, I was so impressed by his intelligence, poise, wit and self belief, I saw him on 'Ellen' today there is a distinct possibility gay life in the USA will have a renaissance if he is the future of gay youth in that country what an intellect you don't see that every day.

lots of fresh new voices out there, humor and wit are still great ways to deal with making progress vs. whining about matters

lots of great voices in the community speaking gay, straight, bi, whatever all in the name of love

Poor Dave. He can barely SAY the words "homosexual" or "heterosexual" without stammering and going, "ah... ahh-- ahh" all over it. Clearly he's still trapped in grade school where even the WORD "sexual" is still dirty and naughty and must be snickered at.

Jim Carrey is a riot.

Jim Carrey made a great point that interviewers should retire that very stale question about the possible consequences of a straight actor playing a gay role. Look at Tom Hanks, Keanu Reeves, Jake Gyllenhaal, Colin Firth, etc. Clearly no negative consequences.

I wonder if Letterman was a little thrown off by Carrey's "seduction", I've not heard the host stammer so much. But I really don't imagine Letterman being so easily thrown off by that...

The answer should have been 'is it ok for a gay actor to play a straight role' - after all that's much more common!

Awesome. Jim Carrey has garnered some new respect from me. Old farts like Letterman really need to grow up. They do act like schoolkids.

I agree with marcusUK about 'gay actor to play a straight role'. Anyone recall the dust up and criticism Sean Hayes had when he was playing a straight man opposite Kristin Chenoweth (most notably from gay writer Ramin Setoodah)? Bravo for Jim Carrey to calling Dave on that one. :)
Also, I saw the movie in Taiwan and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really liked this movie a lot, I would have really LOVED this movie if the 2 main characters had not been so camp and stereotypical. Otherwsie good and so fun to watch the straight guys in the audience squirm at the sex scenes....

Thank you Jim Carrey for your support and standing up for the gay community in the face of stupidity...

You're spot on, chadm. 5 minutes in, I thought Lettermen was auditioning for WarnerBro's Porky Pig. Not sure what Daves demographic audience is cuz I am not in it but hope they were awake for the lesson.

Funny/sad/frustrating movie. Treat yourself and rent it or catch in your local theater or something. Didn't think Ewan playing an effeminate gay man would work, but ah, still charming in this form.

I love Jim Carrey. Right from his days in 'In Living Color'. Love him as the Fire Marshall, and as the Princess Zina or something. He's the best, robbed of Oscars several times.

Jim Carrey - Short. Sharp. Succinct.

P.S- Maybe we in Singapore can direct the same question to certain people in our *coughcough*Constitution*coughcough*.
