A controversial Buddhist monk in Myanmar on Sunday (30 June) used his sermon to mock LGBT martyr Kyaw Zin who committed suicide last month. In a facebook posted video with more than 2,800 shares, Koebweya Sayadaw Ashinasayar labels Kyaw Zin Win a ’sissy’, telling the crowd to ‘drop dead’ if they pity him. He also said he hates gays and encouraged violence against LGBT citizens.
Last month, a 26-year-old librarian at the Myanmar Imperial University shared details of homophobic bullying from colleagues in a Facebook post before taking his own life. His death has sparked calls for Myanmar to repeal its British colonial-era anti-gay law, which punishes gay sex with between ten years and life in prison. Activists have also called for anti-discrimination legislation to protect LGBT citizens from widespread stigma and discrimination.
‘Why should you feel bad for him?’ The Sayadaw asked on Sunday.‘When they sent him to the morgue, they asked for two minutes of silence for their martyr. What kind of martyr is he? He’s gay, he’s a sissy, he killed himself, what martyr?’
