Malaysian rights groups call out state for anti-LGBT actions

The coalition of rights groups claim there is evidence the Malaysian state is directing violence and discrimination towards LGBT people.

Evidence of state-sponsored violence and discrimination against LGBT people in Malaysia has been documented and established, a coalition of LGBT rights and human rights organizations have said.

The groups range from LGBT rights advocacy groups like Seksualiti Merdeka and the ASEAN SOGIE Caucus to human rights organizations like Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM). The 41 local and regional groups have endorsed a statement in support of testimony made by Malaysian LGBT human rights activist, Numan Afifi.

In March this year, Numan made an intervention at the United Nations Human Rights Council during Malaysia’s Universal Periodic Review. He later received flak for having described state programmes that were anti-LGBT as ‘state-sponsored violence’ and was even summoned for police questioning.

Let's see if the editor notices this...

Letter to the editor: Perhaps also mix in some less serious news. All I'm reading is mostly politics and activism news. How about health, relationship tips, funny stories. Being gay and bisexual does not mean we're all interested in politics and gay rights.

Bravo @hylander. Fridae's editor is only interested in reprinting articles from Gay Star News. Nothing is original. Why not? Fridae used to have its own editor and printed much more interesting and thought out articles. And the comments forum was full of interesting and pertinent comments. Gay people around Asia like to know about all sort so lifestyle issues. Everything here ends up being basically quite depressing - all the bad information that we are supposed to be interested in. What about the joy of being gay and how great it is to be living in Asia? Is this not the Asian century?

@hylander - Clearly the editor did not see your post. Indeed, I don't believe there is any actual "editor" as such on the fridae site any more. It probably just reports verbatim any Gay Star News item that relates to Asia. And this is pity because there is a great deal of gay news and news of interest to gays appearing in just regular news outlets around the region.
