Vietnam has named Nguyen Huong Giang as its Miss Universe 2025 contestant, making her the country’s first openly transgender representative at the global pageant. The announcement sparked celebration among fans and advocates who said it sends a powerful message about inclusion.
Giang is a well known singer and TV personality and previously won Miss International Queen. In a statement, she said her goal is to inspire young people to live openly and confidently.
Commentators said the choice reflects changing attitudes in Vietnam’s entertainment industry, where more LGBT artists have found mainstream success. At the same time, advocates pointed out that legal recognition and protections remain limited and need reform.
Internationally, pageants have become a platform for visibility. Several countries now allow trans women to compete after policy changes by organisers. Supporters say the stage can help normalise trans identities for millions of viewers.
Giang’s team said they will use her platform to promote anti bullying efforts and mental health support for young people.
