It's really hard to like or dislike Birth.
It's a unique film written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, who
astonished us with his extraordinary debut film Sexy Beast
in 2000 (shown at the British Film Festival).
Birth stars Nicole Kidman (who has always loved taking
on challenging roles, from Dogville to The Hours)
as a sad widow whose husband died a decade ago of heart attack,
and who is now about to remarry.
But one day, a boy suddenly appears claiming to be the reincarnation
of her dead husband. While she initially doubts him, his intimate
knowledge of her makes her believe him — to the point that
she allows the ten-year-old to take off his clothes and join her
in a bathtub.
Preposterous as the plot may sound, the movie does pull it off.
If you like intelligent and unconventional films, then you may find
Birth strangely beautiful and absorbing. But the movie
does take its time to unveil its mysteries — and by then,
even the more patient of viewers may feel worn down.
