Frostbite

Original Title: Frostbiten

Starring: Petra Nielsen, Grete Havneskold, Emma Aberg, Jonas Karlstrom

Awards: Best Film, International Fantasy Film Award, Fantasporto

Release: 2006-08-29

It is not often that we find a Swedish film making it to Asian cinemas, and almost unheard of to have a Swedish horror film make an appearance. Frostbite bucks this trend, and despite parts of the film being slightly cheesy, actually is rather entertaining. The acting ranges from average to really bad, and the direction and editing are rather amateurish, but there is a lot of humour to be found in the film, and it is just a little hard to dislike a movie that was obviously made with quite a bit of love.

A woman and her daughter move to a small town where weird things seem to be going on — people are being killed under bizarre circumstances, and when an intern steals blood-red pills from the hospital, thinking they are drugs, all hell is set to break loose.

This is supposedly Sweden's first vampire movie, and it is a rather uneven effort, with the high points being the humour and the surprisingly decent CGI in the film. Although the storyline is not new, there are certain scenes that will take audiences by surprise. It won't win any awards, but Frostbite is certainly more enjoyable than most of the horror films released this year.
