Cinderella Man? Sounds like some B-grade gay porn flick with Russell
Crowe in drag. Unfortunately, this is anything but.
Directed by the straight, decent and boring Ron Howard (A Beautiful
Mind), Cinderella Man is a straightforward and decent drama
based on the life of Jim Braddock (played by Russell). Jim was a
gifted boxer who had to give up boxing in the 1930s when he broke
his hand. Later, he gets a second chance and rises out of nowhere
to become the Heavyweight Champion of the World.
Because this is a Ron Howard film, Jim is portrayed as being an
absolutely good and decent person. When one of his kids steals some
food because the family is so poor, Jim drags him straight back
to the shop to return it. When Jim is getting ready for an important
fight, his loving wife (Renee Zellweger) tells him, "You're the
champion of heart.?
Aaaaww, how sweet, how sad, how touching?and how utterly predictable.
Cinderella Man is perfect entertainment for anyone who
enjoys heart-wrenching stories of underdogs who triumph in the end.
But for cynical dykes or dandies who hate tear-jerkers and don't
believe in fairytale endings, stay away.
