Rainbow Boys: The Movie

Director: Thunyatorn Sivanukroe

Language: Thai with English subtitles

Starring: Palat Ananwattanasiri, Jackie, Pimpong Isarasena Ayudhya

Screening: 2005-12-06

It not an all-women affair at the movies this week. For gay
men living in Bangkok, you can catch the terrific new gay film titled
Rainbow Boys: The Movie, a Thai adaptation of a popular
American gay book series.

The story centers on three male university friends who are in various
stages of discovering their personal and sexual identities. There's
Nat who is out and proud; Tat who's afraid to come to his family;
and Ek, a hunky athlete who thinks he may be gay.

The film is ground-breaking in its sympathetic portrayal of gay
men dealing with heartaches and homophobia in Bangkok. It's certainly
a refreshing change from the way gays are usually portrayed in the
country's films — as sluts, money boys, weirdos or AIDS sufferers.
(Yes, these stereotypes prevail even in an all-accepting Buddhist
country like Thailand.)

The original American book series is equally popular with gay and
straight readers in the States. So Rainbow Boys: The Movie
may just be the film that attract mainstream Thai audiences and
help dispel misconceptions of the LGBT community. Fridae is a proud
sponsor of this movie.
