1,200 attend “wedding banquet” in Taipei to support same-sex marriage bill

Some 1,200 people joined a mock "wedding banquet" in Taipei on Saturday to drum up support for a same-sex marriage bill due to be sent to parliament soon.

Over 1,200 attended a mock traditional wedding banquet in front of the Presidential Office on Ketagalan Boulevard on Saturday night evening to show their support for legalising same-sex marriage and equal rights to civil partnerships.

Organised by the advocacy group Taiwan Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights, the event was aimed at building momentum for a bill on legalising same-sex marriage and civil partnership which will be submitted to parliament when its next session begins in mid-September.

The Taipei Times reported:

The alliance drafted amendments to the Civil Code following three years of study and research. The amendments will be forwarded to the Legislative Yuan with the assistance of several lawmakers, including the Democratic Progressive Party’s Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴), Cheng Li-chun (鄭麗君), Yu Mei-nu (尤美女) and Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍).

The proposed amendments aim to provide equal rights to marriage and civil unions to people of all sexual orientation.

“The conventional bedrock principle of family — which incorporates only the union of individuals of the opposite sex — cannot be the only option for everyone,” alliance secretary-general Chien Chih-chieh (簡至潔) said. “Many of the presumed values and elements such as gender should be discarded.”

Taiwan's China Post came out strongly in support of marriage equality in the territory in an editorial on Sunday:

Based on proper wedding invitation etiquette, we should therefore request the pleasure of your company for this one-of-a-kind celebration that will highlight the amendments proposed by the Taiwan Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights... In case you would decline this invitation, however, we should invite you to 'agree to disagree' on the meaning of marriage and move forward with equal rights for everybody. This popular phrase referring to the resolution of a conflict should for sure be the starting point to ensure that couples enjoy not only the support of their families during their wedding but also the support of the law whatever their choice is.

...

The Republic of China is often considered one of the more liberal countries in Asia in terms of homosexual rights; Taipei even hosts one of the largest gay pride parades in Asia each year. According to the TAPCPR, 53 percent of Taiwanese people surveyed favor the legalization of same-sex marriage — twice as many as a decade ago.

[Love] and marriage should not be restricted to heterosexual couples, and marriage licenses should grant the same rights to all. There is no excuse for saying that gay marriage is not necessary because Taiwan's society is “not ready.”
