Uganda Passes Anti Homosexuality Bill

The 2009 Anti-Homosexuality Bill has been now passed by Uganda's parliament. The President could sign it into law as early as tomorrow as LGBT people fear further persecution in the conservative country.

It was revealed today by a spokeswoman for Uganda’s parliament that a long-shelved law that punishes homosexuality with life imprisonment was passed by lawmakers.

The new law was originally known as the ‘Kill The Gays’ bill by media as it included the death penalty for some acts of homosexuality. Thankfully, this clause was left out. However, citizens still face life in prison for ‘aggravated homosexuality’, interpreted as multiple offences. Furthermore, the bill makes it firmly illegal to ‘promote’ homosexuality, and people not reporting homosexual activities also face jail time.

The LGBT community is naturally fearful of this latest piece of homophobic legislation and fear a ‘hunt’ if the law is signed by the President, which could be as early as tomorrow. LGBT activist Frank Mugisha said that the motion had caught everyone off guard. “All of us were unaware. We are going to oppose the bill because it is very unconstitutional. We will do everything we can to oppose it.”

The international community had already condemned the legislation as it lay shelved by the government since 2009. US President Barack Obama labelled it “odious”. The Ugandan government has conceded that such a bill risks cuts in aid from other countries but argued that a “tough new law was needed because homosexuals from the West threatened to destroy Ugandan families”. The lawmakers accuse homosexuals of recruiting young Ugandan children into gay lifestyles.

The bill was passed as a ‘Christmas present’ to the nation, after the government had promised to clean up shelved legislation. On Thursday, an Anti-Pornography Bill was also passed – banning miniskirts and sexually suggestive material. Uganda is a socially conservative country and homosexuality is already illegal. This latest piece of legislation puts pressure on the already persecuted LGBT community who are mainly underground and living in constant fear.

What a surprise...
and now, magically, Uganda will become a prosperous nation, filled with true love and happiness.
People love being deceived, and they love having a target to hate. One day, it just might be them that target, let's see if they applaud then.

Unreal...can you imagine living in such a place? Afraid to go out, to be who you are and afraid that on any given day the police may come to your door in the middle of the night to cart you away to an unimaginably
horrid Ugandan prison...because your neighbor suspected you as being gay and reported you to the police? OMG! and speaking of god...in part we have the evangelical christians of the USA to thank for this.
http://www.humanosphere.org/2013/09/american-evangelicals-colonization-of-africa/

It smells of the Nazis in the 1930's Germany...

It would be nice to see the president NOT sign the legislation into law...but I see little chance of that happening. I agree with the comment above...do people in Uganda really think that this will make everything magically better for them? It makes me so furious.

...and the BBC reports
"...The bill's supporters say it is needed to protect traditional family values, which they say are under attack from Western-inspired gay rights groups. (Really?? are there hordes of Westerners going to Uganda handing out gay materials?)
Its critics say the bill has been pushed by some US evangelical Christians. (No surprise here!)
Uganda is a socially conservative country and on Thursday passed an Anti-Pornography Bill, which bans miniskirts and sexually suggestive material such as some music videos." (What's next..banning certain books..or short pants perhaps?)

What do you expect from spear-wielding savages??
11. 2013-12-21 08:52
if the country didnt have enough problems without trying to self implode with persecuting its own... god forbid, the country seems to be run by the stupidest of the lot, and lets not forget it has a religious backing...

These animals who passed this are an insult to humanity. I hope you know Uganda, that the world is laughing at you. The wish for many is to gain in intellect and humanity. But now we can see why this place is the laughing stock of the world, matched by a terribly low IQ as well. It is like the lowest form of animal is in control.

Continue with your RELIGIOUS and UNEDUCATED ways and continue to show how low intellect works! You are doing a good job so far.

Hopefully you are smart enough not to piss in your own drinking water..but I am not sure...Shame on you......

1. Every country should protect its citizen ,receive/respect their all citizen that are Human. able to give food and needs to all citizen.

2. Some law makers have no enough capabilities to protect/to provide/ to respect all human created that born in their country..

at the other hand, the law makers also want to live, want to eat, want occupancy, and afraid to go to Heaven quickly.

What to do When Law makers have no ability to make law that should facilitate, help, give life to all Human?
The law maker would adopt Law that already made.
This made them very easy, not to think, not to work hard.
Just copy and paste.

The law maker would adopt Rule of Hollybooks.
It is a mistake If the Law maker do not Understand character of Hollybook.

Let see character of Hollybook : " I am Correct and others are Wrong/Sin"

Hollybook is invasion said " this is for me, not for other", it is the need of power. more and more. that is invasion/imperialism.

If many countries adopt such Hollybook, They will have tendency to blame of other countries and will have no willingness to contribute to other countries.
It is not only in countries, but organizations, Companies, etc.

I Often Heard, In my Country Indonesia. How people blame other countries/other people because they have no capabilities to protect/ to give food/life to others.
It become habit/culture.

While in My country, already made Rule to contribute to other countries/people but because of Religions, it make them blame other countries upon our problems. We are here lost of love.
We forget that God already created people with varies in different quantity. majority, medium and minority and may be one creation that differ from all.

So, Please All law makers in the world for not adopt rule from Hollybook but Adopt God that created all Human being.

I know you may be have no enough capabilities to make rules but at other hand you also want Rule to protect yourselves.
We live together in difference.

You , All makers, should not be worry if you have no enough capabilities to make Rule to provide all Human Created live well.
Because We are not law makers also should protect/ giving food and life to you.

But You should not adopt (copy-paste) Rules from Hollybook
Because Hollybook did not created human.
Because Hollybook authors (that want to be called God) did not create Human.

And Because everybody is imperfect include Law makers.
Remember that Evil/Satan want to be regarded as God.
God is not as small as Hollybook.

So, Everybody should be aware
That You are not law maker but you have obligation to protect and give life to All law makers.
We all are not perfect and We all are having abnormalities.

and businesses there should be thankful im spending my tourist dollars there!
same old story accepting me but still anti-gay laws.
21. 2013-12-23 16:17
This is both ironic and stupid. Why? In the past, black people were discriminated. There were even violent religious groups like KKK who thought God hated black people. Interracial marriage with black people was also condemned...

Now, black people discriminate gays with similar reason: God hates gay people. Wow.... Go back to history class, Uganda! Don't discriminate people if you don't want to be discriminated!
22. 2013-12-27 17:50
This is not the only country where laws discriminate against gay people. In malaysia you can be whipped and imprisoned for indulging in sex with someone of the same gender. The muslim religion is strongly anti gay and the religion encompasses a large proportion of the worlds population. India has repealed laws "allowing" homsexuality. From what I can see worldwide the battle to have same sex attracted couples be regarded as perfectly normal and acceptable is being lost . Uganda politicians making this law deserves all the condemnation on this page and more, their barbarism and stupidity is beyond belief.

just another country without a moral direction. An even darker version of what is happening in places like China, Russia, Malaysia and several others. When you repress the human right to express yourself, you deny yourself a future and any moral standing.

Re. Maximilian
Before putting in writing what you profess , please get your facts right. I have not lived in either Russia or Malaysia , but sure remember the 2/3 yrs I lived in Beijing in China , as the happiest ones of my entire life. Actually wondered why Beijing had not replaced San Francisco as gay Capital of the world. Have you lived in Beijing or even been there ? I doubt it ; before spreading false rumours about places / countries next time , please inform yourself properly. Just try to read about Chinese history prior to communism , and you will discover that Chinese society was a modern day version of the Greek empire re. Gays.Hope that u'll remember my words , as you try to decide which gay sauna to go to if ever you you decide to dispute my assertions / statements , and visit Beijing.
