Rights of LGBT persons not guaranteed in Malaysia, says PM

Malaysian Prime Minister, Najib Razak, has said that his administration will only be able to uphold human rights within the confines of Islam

Speaking at an international Islamic moderation seminar in Bangi, Selangor the Malaysian Prime Minister said he could not defend some aspects of human rights, including LGBT equality.

"Although universal human rights have been defined, we still define human rights in the country in the context of Islam and the Shariah," he said, according to the Malay Mail.

"Even though it is difficult to defend internationally, we must defend our definition of human rights," the website Malaysiakini said.

"And even if we cannot defend human rights at an international level, we must defend it in the Islamic context," he told the seminar.

The comments were slammed by Human Rights Watch. Asia deputy director Phil Robertson told a news conference that hKuala Lumpur should withdraw from the United Nations if the government was not serious about upholding human rights.

"The logical argument from that would be Malaysia should resign from the UN. Is Malaysia prepared to do that?" he asked.

Basic human rights are above religions of any kind. They are not dependent on any belief system. They are a fundamental right of everyone on this planet.

" ..... within the confines of Islam ... "

Yep, just like being in gaol really. Do what the wardens tell you, think only what you are told to think and do nothing that might be described as enjoyable.

Quite like some flavours of Christianity really.

"When we speak of human rights in Islam we really mean that these rights have been granted by God; they have not been granted by any king or by any legislative assembly."

@22longchamp Maybe I should have used the qualifying "economically" in front of "advanced country". There's enough information about that on Wikipedia. I have friends there which makes this issue more personal and worrisome.

Their airline is perfectly safe.

It's the pms views that anger their god.

And Muhammad's preferred wife was a 9-year-old girl.

And all the evil fatwas

Since they are not granted all protections will they then be responsible for less taxation? I doubt it.

They would probably ultimately seize all assets. After this their tax bill will be zero, in common with all victims of stoning.

I wonder if the PM, being such a diligent follower of Islam, is ready to have his hands chopped off.

If they try this stuff in Canada, we just tell them to go home and there are tons of Canadians willing to assist I remember a bus driver telling an Islamist who started to preach on the bus, to stop. The driver pulled over and stopped the bus and stood up and yelled out "there will be no preaching on my bus and if you continue, you will be told to get off". This driver was hero.
