Asturias has signed its own LGBTQ+ equality law, adding a regional framework against discrimination in northern Spain. President Adrián Barbón signed the measure on 15 October, a day after its approval by the regional parliament.
The Asturias government says the legislation protects the rights of lesbian, gay, trans, bisexual and intersex people and their families. Only Vox voted against it. Until this vote, Asturias was one of two Spanish autonomous communities without legislation of its own in this field.
Barbón acknowledged the long campaign by local groups at the signing ceremony. He also said resources would have to follow the law to put it into practice.
The national LGBTQ+ federation FELGTBI+ welcomed the parliamentary approval in a statement on 14 October. It credited years of work by Asturian organisations and unions, and praised legislators for preserving the text agreed with those groups.
The federation also pointed to Castilla y León, which it said remained without a regional LGBTQ+ or trans law. It argued that regional protection matters in areas such as education and healthcare.
