Isaac Humphries reflects on coming-out legacy after retirement

The Australian basketballer speaks about pride, visibility and life after his playing career.

Isaac Humphries has spoken about the pride he takes in coming out as gay, days after a persistent knee injury brought his professional basketball career to an end.

Speaking to ABC Sport’s Summer Grandstand in an interview reported on 25 October, the 28-year-old said the 2022 decision had been frightening. “It’s been the best thing I could have ever done,” he said.

He’s sad to lose that on-court visibility, and believes his coming-out legacy will remain.

The Adelaide 36ers announced his retirement on 20 October, after 173 National Basketball League games across eight seasons. He played for Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne, and has represented Australia.

The 36ers say he has accepted a non-playing role with the club’s community, marketing and commercial teams.
