Couples apply for same-sex marriage in Philippines

Two same-sex couples applied for marriage licences this week. They were promptly rejected by the government.

A lesbian couple and a gay male couple have applied for marriage licences in Manila, hoping to raise awareness about gay rights in the country.

Maria Arlyn Ibanez and her partner Joanne Reena Gregorio joined Pastor Crescencio Agbayani and his partner Marlon Pelipe at the civil registry office in the country’s capital.

The Philippines government has previously said that no same-sex unions will be recognised unless a law was passed. Such legislation is unlikely to make it passed legislators allied with the conservative catholic church.

Ibanez and Agbayani posed for photos in front of the of the registry office with a sign aying "We were denied" and a rainbow flag.

"We expected it would be denied but we tried it anyway....We thought maybe there would be a miracle and it would be approved," Ibanez, a 33-year-old call centre worker, told AFP.

Gay rights lawyer Clara Rita Padilla said the marriage licence applications reflected the need to legalise same-sex unions in the Philippines.

"The right to marry is guaranteed by our constitutional rights to equality, equal protection of the law, privacy, and religion," she told Straits Times.

Eventually your government like ours here in the US will wake up to the fact that people are people and love is love and nothing else matters really.

Until that day, i have hope for you there.

The US seem to think a lot of things matter other than love.

The right to bare arms is one example. Totally bonkers and highlights how fear can be used to rule a population.

One must remember the Catholic Church in the Philippines has the final say in allowing Gay Marriage there, as they are far more Anti-Gay
compared with Western Countries.
So much for loving your Fellow Man in certain Religions such as theirs!
