Vietnam’s schools remain dangerous for LGBT youth

A year after gay marriage ban lifted in Vietnam, country still has a long way to go for LGBT equality, local media reports

Vietnam abolished its ban on same-sex marriage at the beginning of 2015, much to the praise of activists .

The move set Vietnam apart from most other countries in the region. However, a year on there are reports that not much has changed for LGBT’s day to day lives.

A report from the English-language website of local youth newspaper Thanh Nien News, published just after the first anniversary of the lifting of the ban, reveals the discrimination faced by LGBT youth.

The report tells of four LGBT students’ experiences of bullying and institutional discrimination at school.

The education ministry and UNESCO found that 19 percent of polled students considered it was "harmless" to tease and bully their LGBT classmates.

Nearly 70 percent of parents surveyed by the Hanoi-based LGBT group iSEE said they would prohibit their children from being friends with their LGBT classmates.

Wow. It's like unconnected areas behave like unconnected areas.

Time takes time.

I agree that in a country as traditionally conservative as Vietnam acceptance of gay relationships is going to take time - and education. It's one thing for a government to make a pronouncement about a new freedom for a certain group within society. It's quite another to expect that the rest of society will automatically agree without an extensive education programme.

It takes time for general acceptance in every culture. Also it has never been accepted 100% in countries where it is legal!

What a shame. The three writers above all advocate that it will take time to adjust, yet many states in the U.S. who have voted to allow LGBT openness have had hardly any conflict. Our schools are now open and the students are taught not to bully. Our police officers are taught to be respectful of all LGBT persons. here are a list of 35 cities that not only are LGBT friends but embrace the LGBT communities. #1. LOS ANGELES, CA #2. NEW YORK, NY #3. SAN FRANCISCO, CA #4. DES MOINES, IA
#5. CHICAGO, IL #6. SEATTLE, WA #7. ALBANY, NY #8. ROCHESTER, NY #9. DENVER, CO #10. MADISON, WI #11. HARRISBURG, PA #12. HARTFORD, CT #13. PROVIDENCE, RI #14. SAN DIEGO, CA #15. WASHINGTON, D.C. #16. PORTLAND, OR #17. SAN JOSE, CA #18. BOSTON, MA #19. SACRAMENTO, CA #20. MINNEAPOLIS, MN #21. CHATTANOOGA, TN #22. MILWAUKEE, WI #23. HONOLULU, HI
#24. RIVERSIDE, CA #25. LAS VEGAS, NV #26. WORCESTER, MA
#27. FRESNO, CA #28. PHILADELPHIA, PA #29. STOCKTON, CA
#30. ATLANTA, GA #31. NEW HAVEN, CT #32. SYRACUSE, NY #33. BAKERSFIELD, CA #34. BUFFALO, NY #35. OXNARD, CA.
All of this has taken place over the past two years.
Now the Federal Government will and has prosecuted those who do not uphold the law or bully LGBT persons with hate crimes, i.e. [ Offenses involving actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin. or sexual orientation —Whoever, whether or not acting under color of law, willfully causes bodily injury to any person or, through the use of fire, a firearm, a dangerous weapon, or an explosive or incendiary device, attempts to cause bodily injury to any person, because of the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, or sexual preferance of any person—
(A) shall be imprisoned not more than 10 years, fined in accordance with this title, or both; and
(B) shall be imprisoned for any term of years or for life, fined in accordance with this title, or both, if—
(i) death results from the offense; or
(ii) the offense includes kidnapping or an attempt to kidnap, aggravated sexual abuse or an attempt to commit aggravated sexual abuse, or an attempt to kill.]
If Vietnam's government is serious than the above should apply.

So gemama lists cities when the article relates to rural areas.

Education is the key not imposing your will on others. Otherwise you will get the backlash you deserve for being intolerant.

Where does the article refer to rural areas?

I went to the Than Nien News report, which mentions Ho Chi Minh city twice, Ben Tre province once (not really rural) and Hanoi several times.

GT, if you like to bitch at least bitch soundly!

More importantly, the report shows that officials are aware of the situation and want to do something about it. I would not have taken this for granted!

Thanks for having my back drelin. Perhaps GTiLad has his 'rural' confused with his 'urban'.

Bullying of gay students still occurs in the UK.
