Japan's ruling party reveals draft 'LGBT understanding' bill

The bill contains no mention of marriage rights or anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people.

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) on Tuesday (25 June) revealed a draft bill aiming to improve understanding of LGBT issues.
Local LGBT rights advocates criticised the draft for containing no mention of same-sex marriage or anti-discrimination legislation. The LDP’s special committee took three years to consult on and draft the ‘LGBT Understanding and Enhancement Bill’. It is reported to include a basic plan for the ‘realisation of a tolerant society that accepts the diversity of sexual orientation and gender identity’. LDP’s LGBT special committee chairman Furuya said the party hopes to submit the bill in the next session of parliament.

I often wonder why fridae only takes most of its news from Gay Star News. It was never like this a few years ago when real news about Asia was published. Rather than this general note about a draft bill which may never go through the legislature, why not report on actual developments in Japan? Three days ago - in other words REAL news - Ibaraki Prefecture became the 22nd Municipality/Prefecture in Japan to issue partnership certificates to the LGBT community. Shibuya and Setagaya wards in Tokyo became the first in 2015. Japan is moving slowly in typical Japan fashion. But it is moving!
