Indonesian city pushing for anti-LGBT law

The Indonesian city of Depok with nearly two million inhabitants is planning an anti-LGBT law.

The City Council of Depok, not far from the capital Jakarta, is following other regions legislating against LGBT people amid nationwide anti-LGBT hysteria. Homosexuality is not currently illegal in most of the country but in some areas, it is illegal under Sharia Law. City Council member and opposition party politician Hamzah told local media all parties in the city supported the draft law, the exact details of which remain unclear. Hamzah told the news site saura.com the regulations were based on philosophical and sociological concerns.

‘So it seems to continue’ renowned Indonesian LGBT rights activist Dede Oetomo said of the backsliding in LGBT rights. ‘At the moment I don’t see anything that could stop it’ he told Gay Star News, the LGBT news and editorial site.

Another anecdotal evidence: I live in Indonesia (Jakarta to be exact). One particular apartment complex in South Jakarta also recently posted an anti-(drug+prostitution+LGBT) campaign poster. But then the following couple of weeks the poster got changed to anti-(drug+prostitution) one. So at least in some areas, the fight to support LGBT rights still exists.

Fascinating that you live in Jakarta. It's decades since I visited the city and so know little about it. But some of the LGBT hate speech over the last years leading up to the election was pretty scary. For the Defence minister to claim publicly that fighting off the LGBT threat was akin to a nuclear war must have been pretty scary.

Frankly speaking, I've lived for almost 20 years here and can still say I know little about this city, much less the LGBT-related side of it. Things have been changing a lot this past few years (most of it for the better). For example, we finally have MRT this year.
