A Very Long Engagement is a splendid French film that
combines elements of drama, comedy, romance, war-action and investigative
mystery so well, that almost everyone would like this gem.
Its director Jean Pierre Jeunet and lead actress Audrey Tatou certainly
know how to marry high art and mass appeal. After all, they were
the same people who brought you the charming international hit Amelie
a few years ago.
Here, the likeable pixie-faced Audrey plays a woman whose fiance
gets conscripted during World War I. News later arrive that he has
been killed, but she does not believe it and decides to look for
him herself.
A Very Long Engagement tells a fascinating love story
in a visually splendid way, with lots of CGI-created shots that
make the film look like a charming pop-up book. It will appeal to
everyone — even the ageing queens who have become jaded and
cynical about love and romance.
