The Malaysia Star reported that openly gay American Idol star Adam Lambert played to a full-house at his concert at the Putra Indoor Stadium in the Malaysian capital on Thursday night despite a peaceful protest outside the venue led by the conservative Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party (PAS).
Earlier this week, Lambert had pledged to tone down his performance in accordance to Malaysian government guidelines after Malaysian authorities gave his concert the go-ahead despite objections from the opposition Islamic party. The party had accused the singer to be "morally unfit" to perform in Malaysia and poses a threat to young people.

According to the state-run Bernama news agency, PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan said they were against the concert because it contradicted the eastern values, religious teaching, it was obscene and promoted the "gay" culture.
"Adam Lambert is an American artist who has become a gay icon. This is proven with man and man kissing on stage, a culture which should be rejected by Malaysians," he added.
The 28-year-old star created controversy with his performances, including at the American Music Awards where he simulated a sex act on stage and kissed a male keyboard player. Videos of Lambert kissing his male musician at many of his shows are widely available on the Internet.
"I think some people have a problem with me kissing a boy on stage," told reporters hours before the concert. "But you know, as much as I hate to compromise any time, it's more important for me to bring to the people of Malaysia my show… I’m just refraining from making one little kiss; I don’t think it’s that big of a deal.”
In recent years, several female pop stars, including Gwen Stefani and Fergie, had to avoid skimpy costumes while performing in Malaysia.

Why do you insult the country? The Government allowed the concert. That was good enough .Only a small group of people were protesting mildly and its their right to protest. Gay people in Malaysia are not being persecuted like in some countries. They are many gay venues in Malaysia but as the saying goes "When in Rome do as the Romans do" i.e you have to be discreet when you indulge in gay activities in Malaysia..

Many gay venues? many gay venue raided you mean? Do you read the news on that often on fridae or any other mediums???
I just recently had a friend being threatened to a fine by a police just because he gave a peck on another guy. How is that for persecution where as a gay person you preferred to just pay up the fine instead of making a bigger deal of it, due to fear of being outed to the public. You have to bear in mind that ppl in M'sia are being preyed upon even to situation as small as this and to me its a brand new type of persecution. All because of a clause in the law!! and Anwar Ibrahim might disagree to you on that one too, and nobody is even sure if he is gay or straight yet.
Secondly, i would agree that they have the right to protest but there is no such thing as a mild protest. As knives are much blunt to that of words in terms of the msgs spewed by this ppl, how would u know their 'mild' acts might have spurned someone there to be an anti-gay cum murderer ala super villain in tights that use the word justice to kill gay people with a double kris like Elektra? Cases like this will never end up in newspapers or your local tv and thus you won't know if there's even harsher persecution than this that happens so please don't EVER say as if you know that ppl are not being persecuted!

Religion is usually a convenient mask to hide behind when making such protests, shouting out that homosexuality offends God (although, then again, He never calls down the lightning in Malaysia, Iran or central London whenever gay guys/gals get together, which rather suggests that He doesn't care - it's the shouting mob, and people, that create problems, rather than religion or God or Allah or Superman or Master Yoda). Then again, people can - and do - object to homosexuality without any connection or link to religion or beliefe at all, simple believing that homosexuality is wrong, but without any religious context.
I'm as fed-up of Homosexual intolerance and bigotry as I am of the Straight variety - this just shows that people are just people, regarless of sexuality, race or creed...
I am glad that he did tone his act down if it made it possible to perform in front of 10,000 of people - who no doubt did get the message even it it was toned down. I hope the 100 did feel part of a tiny minority and learned what is it like to be in a minority.

Some pple need to tone down the Moslem bashing many Moslems ARE capable of accepting their Gay sons and daughters Uncles or Aunties, just like christians and Jews many make up their own minds no matter what negativity the heirachy spew at them, venom towards all Moslem people will bring us no merit points and actually end up being counter productive as it will alienate those many good Moslems who are accepting and supportive of us or at least unsure and could become future allies with the right treatment.

Meanwhile, wonder how the protesters would feel if gay people protested at an Akademi Fantasia concert for being totally unfabulous, devoid of any coolness and very 'kampung'?? ;p
Granted we don't hold hands in public like we would in London or San Francisco but two guys checking into a Langkawi Island resort hotel to a room with one double bed... the Muslim woman at the front desk didn't even blink... Try that in some of the more "red" parts of the United States and you are taking your life in your hands.
