Malaysian MP causes uproar in parliament with remarks on sodomy, LGBT rights

A ruling party lawmaker caused a stir in parliament yesterday when he urged the government to take measures to curb “social problems” including what he said was a move made by a group of Malaysian NGOs to promote LGBT rights at the United Nations.

Barisan National MP Datuk Seri Noh Omar created a stir in parliament on Wednesday when he said that the greatest threat to Malaysia are religious conflicts, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights advocacy. He was debating the amendments to the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act.

According to local media reports, the former Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister accused the opposition party of being involved with the Coalition of Malaysian NGOs (Comango) in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on human rights. The coalition , which is in Geneva for the human rights review, had urged the government to endorse Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) rights or LGBT rights, among other demands.

When Parti Keadilan Rakyat MP (PKR) MP Sim Tze Tzin interjected saying that Noh should focus on other human rights issues such as abuse on migrant workers and human trafficking, Noh reportedly asked Sim if he would like it if a man had sex with another man.

When PKR MP Nurul Izzah Anwar tried to interject, he asked her about her views on sodomy alluding to her father, Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy case.

It then prompted a heated exchange between ruling coalition UMNO and opposition MPs.

Nurul Izzah, who is the daughter of Anwar Ibrahim, the former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and de facto leader of the PKR, was reportedly incensed by his remarks and demanded Noh withdraw his unparliamentary words.

Anwar Ibrahim was jailed in 1999 on sodomy and corruption charges which was widely seen as being politically motivated. The Supreme Court in 2004 overturned the sodomy conviction.

Noh reportedly slammed the NGO which campaigned for LGBT rights at the UN which he said had amounted to insulting the Malaysian Constitution and undermining Islam. He also urged the Registrar of Societies (ROS) to take action if it was found that any of the 54 organisations in Comango was unregistered.

My aunt spent many years in Malaysia in the 50s, and all the impressions I got was that it was such a good place. Yet in recent years it seems to have been hijacked, maybe by Saudi influence, and is going from one bad thing to another. Certainly it is not the easy going country it once was. I think many of its politicians should have a travel ban imposed on them, as they don't seem to share normal world views.

the aim of religion is making conflicts at anywhere, how religion got follower? Religion using some kindness as cosmetic to attract follower but the body itself was making conflicts and invasion to everywhere. That why all of religion holders will always have sin forever.

Even if none LGBT on earth, The conflicts will always b happened.
Even, if only one religion exist, conflicts will always b happened.
You need to understand basic character of religion
so you will not be confused and blaming others.

We should not be a whore of religion maker that want to do invasion.
If "holly book" is holly, it must be God. But you know that Allah will never as small as Hollybook.
But satan/evils always want to be regarded as God.

Case of Anwar Sodomy just personal thing as long as that it was not violence, that was Ok.
Everybody has own private life.

Do you think that Prophets were Holly?
why we did not punish/jailed prophet?
because only God that is holy, none else.

what should be jailed?
if you talk lie should we sent you to jail?
if you do not wear white color, should we sent you to jail?

Mean, lets every nation having own rules (good or bad) as every nation will improve their rule by theirselves.
Religion should not b allowed to make rule.
Lets every people of nation to improve their rules this is called quality assurance system.
Offcourse every nation may have problems in making rule, because nobody born mature instantly. that is growing.
But we should not give religion to insult nations because religion just camouflage matter.
Every countries should realize that they are growing and their rules should always be evaluated-improved but without religion influence.
this is the true faith to God.

Every country should realize that their countries is imperfect that they should always monitor and evaluate to grow,
Growing represent that you are looking for God, not looking for religion. because God is for Human, not for religion.

Competition make people asking religion support.
That is not correct.
because support should not come from religion but from own people, as the aim of nation is for people, not for religion
God is for people, not for religion, not for Hollybook, not for prophet
because God had made judgment to prophet to leave away earth forever. Soul of death people that still exist was satan
Because soul is about God and satan.

Yes, Prophets were abnormal people
but religion accept this abnormality for power and money.
Religion/hollybook and concept of prophet had made conflicts.
That is sin.

The greatest threat to Malaysia is these morons who place RELIGION over common sense. I have been to Malaysia several times and every time I see the same stupidity over and over again.

It is fine to have this muslim majority in the country. But like any group that has held power for over 50 years they have inbred their ideas and they become more asinine and comical.

But sadly in this case the INMATES are running the asylum. So as bizarre and off kilter as their ideas are, they see them as making sense to their very narrow and warped view of life and religion. I am not against any religion, but I am very much against any religion having a say in government. Remember religion requires you to not question or really even think. So the less intellect you use the better. This does not work well in government. To be honest it does not work in the main fabric of life either. A keen mind and intellect is often needed in government. Of course that does not always help.
Also, it does not work with a large group of sexually repressed gays who are doing this now.

Remember if someone is very closeted, they will attack gays far stronger than any straight person will. This has been proved over and over again.

So I hope this rather nasty fellow gets what he truly needs.

1. An open mind
2. A broader view of the world and life
3. Perhaps a good man to teach him a few things.. :)
4. Lastly, a less stronger lock on his closet door. Then perhaps with his new found wisdom he can see the folly of his words.

Of course I am joking here as I know this guy does not the intellectual integrity or his own religious freedom to think otherwise. Sadly that is just pathetic... Like his views, freedoms, and understandings. Ruled by an imaginary God, who's views are even sicker than this this losers.

Heh... another stupid comments by stupid MPs (and stupid is the nicest word I could muster). I wonder where did they get their education? Why would people elect them every time the election comes around still baffles me. And he's not the first MPs to utter stupid things in public. As long as the people keep on electing this kind of people into office, Malaysia will never be secular and free as it used to be.

Another foolish, idiotic, unintelligent and senseless remark made by a so-called educated MP! Shame on him. He's a disgrace to Malaysian parliament, Malaysian and the nation.
This shows that people and other MPs like him and the government (BN/ UMNO) are very naive, or just simply ignore and do not want to accept the existence and reality of LGBT in contemporary Malaysian society, which is growing and coming out gradually!

Guys like that seem to think a *lot* about sodomy. A Lot. I wonder if, when it's Friday Night time with his wife/mistress/secretary/whatever, he starts thinking about men sodomising men... Naked men intertwining, parts going everywhere... Cocks and dicks and bottoms and Oooooh...

Idiot.

I guess the Malaysian government isn't concerned about its generally negative image, internationally, for a number of reasons - *including* it's homophobic stance, which *is* noted by other countries, and which hereterosexual people also note, and find offputting.

After all, if any country or society starts getting "Not safe/welcoming for [insert Whoever, here]..." associated with it, that becomes an immediate negative mark that's hard to remove, and creates a negative image. While plenty of countries in the region have their own negative points to note - just as my country does, and every country does - Malaysia's international image is already not great without its lawmakers further making the country look likes a place to skip - which is partly why, say, Thailand is much more popular for tourists (even though Thailand is a censorious state with civil rights issues of its own, such as the dictatorial and foul Lese Majeste law to punish anyone criticising the monarchy).

I don't really think much about sodomy - but then, I'm not a Malaysian politician... :-P

Nowadays every time an UMNO representative opens their mouth, they will incite outrage in some way - LGBT issues are just one of many targets.

Of course at the end of the day they are behaving like Russia - focusing on such issues to distract the public from their incompetence as governors.

'Opinionated' people will not change their mind on a subject - that is still acceptable.

Bigoted people will not change their mind OR the subject. Big difference.

When, oh when, will these religious bigots get their 'comeuppance'?
These awful fundamentalist believers, be they Muslim, Jew or Christian continue to wreak havoc across the globe.
The man or woman in the street simply has to be better educated to realise the hatred and lies they propagate. Until then they will still garner support for their evil, inhumane doctrines and misconceptions about what is basic, common humanity and kindness to each other.

It's blunt ignorance..... some people can't accept the fact that we are born this way and resort to out of context bible-quotes.
