Watch: Short documentary lifts lid on 'conversion therapy' in China

Al Jazeera's digital video channel explores widespread practice, and one man who fought back.

Across China, families send gay sons and daughters to “conversion clinics” that claim to make their patients straight.

Last year, Yanzi Peng took a stand and sued the clinic that hypnotized him and gave him electroshock therapy. AJ+ follows Yanzi as he takes the unprecedented step to file a lawsuit against a clinic and fights to end the practice.

THE CHINESE ARE THE SAME AS THE NAZI DOCTOR. WITH HIS EXPERIMENTS ON HOMOSEXUALS......
THERE ARE AT LEAST 25MILLION HOMOSEXUALS IN CHINA, IF YOU TAKE THE MEN OUT NUMBER THE WOMEN TO MEN RATIO....2-1.....SO AT LEAST 100 MILLION MEN WILL NEVER GET MARRIED. WHAT A CATASROPHY, MAO MADE WITH HIS ONE CHILD POLICY. IT SHOWS HIS METALITY EH.

the best thing about this whole interview is Yanzi PENG's own comment that it "isnt a disease and needed be cured" yet apparently so many of them feel the guilt formulated by the society....

So the clinic didn't offer a cure anyway.

And the guy went to them wanting help.

I don't think they were preying on him.

The piece is rather confusing. How did the baidu case go? What did the police want with the human rights lawyer? Was it anything to do with electric shock therapy?

My heart is sad for the gays in China... the culture has yet to realize and accept this is part of the normal human experience.

It is not a mental illness or disease to be cured... We in America are now starting to embrace diversity. I hope others can too.

Such 'conversion therapies' used to be pretty common in some 'red states' of the USA. Dig a little harder and you'll notice all these 'conversion' clinics having a common denominator : religious-group sponsors. Google 'focus on the family' and 'exodus international' for examples. And they are gaining ground across Asia, esp China where there has been an exponential growth of ' christian' converts over the last decade. It seems like the 'ex-gay' movement is trying to take root in Asia, in part due to growing wealth across the region (conversion therapies don't come cheap). Yanzi Peng is, indeed a great and admirable man for resisting their mercenary agendas. *Respect* and hopefully he can win the support/ protection he deserves.
