The Eye 10

Director: Pang Brothers (Oxide & Danny Pang)

Starring: Chen Po Lin, Kate Yeung, Isabella Leong, Kris Gu, Ray MacDonald, Bongkoth Kongmalai

Screening: 2005-03-29

Milking the successful The Eye franchise for all that
it's worth, the Pang brothers return with another The Eye
instalment — though this time it's more slapstick than scary.

The story begins when four Hong Kong tourists in rural Thailand
decide to follow the 10 instructions of a mysterious Thai book on
how to summon and see ghosts. However, once they've acquired the
ability to see spooks, they cannot shake it off.

The first film, The Eye (2002), was such an effective
and believable horror thriller, that it easily became a region-wide
hit. The central idea is that Mun (Angelica Lee) did not go searching
for ghosts. She simply acquired the terrible gift of seeing spirits
after an eye operation. This made sense to audiences — which
sane person would want to see such gruesome sights?

But in The Eye 10, the characters go ghost-hunting happily
in jungles and dark corridors — making them comic rather than
sympathetic characters.

To be fair, the movie does start off on a very frightful note.
But as it proceeds, it becomes supremely nutty and comical. In one
scene, a ghost-possessed character starts doing breakdance moves
while the neighbours clap and cheer him on.
