Underworld: Evolution

Director: Len Wiseman

Starring: Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, Tony Curran

Screening: 2006-02-28

As all LGBTs know, the first rule of cool is never try too hard.
Underworld: Evolution tries very hard to be a stylish and
action-packed 'vampire vs werewolves' flick. All it is is an incoherent
mess.

Sure, Fridae welcomes any excuse to dress Kate Beckinsale in sexy
black leather and have her kick serious ass. It explains why legions
of lesbians went to see the first Underworld movie in 2004
and helped make it a box-office hit, even though it was a very average
film. Gay men flocked to it too, just to see Scott Speedman (from
Felicity) rip his shirt and turn into a werewolf.

But this sequel is truly bad. It should be called Devolution,
not Evolution. You can barely follow the haphazard storyline
about vampire warrior Selene (Kate) and her boyfriend Michael (Scott)
fighting a super-vampire (Tony Curran). Selene shoots at her enemy
with sophisticated weapons, but what's stupid about the whole thing
is that he cannot be killed that way. So why does she keep shooting?

This and more plot-holes will bombard any viewer who stubbornly
insists on watching it.
