While it is not the first butch hunt ever held in Singapore, Club Herstory's Butch Hunt 2001, presenting 16 contenders, has broken all previous records. The competition's highly successful on-line poll presented on Fridae.com has attracted over 80,000 page views and more than 1000 votes since the contest's launch on May 31.

Presented in conjunction with Club Herstory, members of Fridae will be able to vote for their favourite butch each round until the finals in July. Four contenders will be eliminated at each round. At the end of 4 weeks, the top-voted contestant will be presented with the Fridae Surfers' Choice Award and a Palm Vx worth S$599.

An estimated 1,300 women turned up at Zouk Club, one of Singapore's largest nightclubs on Tuesday night where the preview for the contest was held. Unfortunately, due to the club being packed to the rafters, some patrons had to be turned away due to fire and safety restrictions. The queue to enter Zouk stretched as far as the club's carpark.

The sixteen contestants who performed song and/or dance routines on Tuesday night will meet again on July 3, when the finals are held. It will be a pageant-styled contest with a question and answer session, fashion parade and judging.

Club Herstory was started in June 1998 to provide one of the few opportunities for lesbians to get together. It has since become the monthly event for lesbians in Singapore. This is its first cooperative effort with Fridae.com.
