hunky chris wins butch hunt title, fridae award

More than 1600 women packed Zouk Club in Singapore on 3rd July to watch the finals of the Butch Hunt 2001 contest.

Twenty-six year old Chris Yee, beat 15 other contestants to win the butch hunt title amidst furious debate on the Fridae forums and calls for disqualification because he was "too manly" and speculation that he was taking testoterone to increase bulk. Some forum posters even questioned whether he was still biologically female.

When questioned on these matters, however, the organisers told Fridae that Yee was eligible to participate in the competition and that the accusations were baseless.

Despite the naysayers and controversy, Yee went on to claim the title, as well as capture the highest votes on Fridae's online poll. In the last round of the online poll, Chris attracted 676 of 1828 votes. Chris was also more than a hundred votes ahead of his closest competitor, Bai.

By 9pm, hundreds of patrons were lining the street outside the club in anticipation of queues similar to those at last month's Butch Hunt preview party, where hundreds had to be turned away when the crowd was filled to capacity.

The 16 contestants were asked to perform a song and/or dance act in groups or solo before being grilled by fabulous drag hosts Leroy and Rizal in the question and answer segment. Contestants had to face probing questions about their favourite sex toys, sexual positions, vegetables as sex toy substitutes among other blush-inducing topics.

The contest is Club Herstory's first attempt at organising a pageant. Club Herstory was set up to give lesbians in Singapore a place to meet up and party every month since 1998. The women-only parties are held every first Tuesday of the month.

The panel of judges were composed of: Singapore's darling drag goddess, Kumar; the 1999 winner of Femme Quest, Lin Goh; drag performer Amy, and representatives from the event sponsors, Future Look, Dean Salon, Zouk and Fridae.

Other winners were:

- Bai, 1st runner up
- Gerald, 2nd runner up
- Bai, Audience choice
- Bai, Mr Photogenic
- Gerald, Best performance
- Ashley, Mr Personality
