out and about in Singapore

Despite being thought of as a conservative and sterile country, gays and lesbians in Singapore have a varied choice of social and support groups to go to. Fridae brings you an update of what's out there.

One In Ten
One In Ten is a non-profit organisation that facilitates networking opportunities for gay and lesbian professionals. Its aim is to foster economic interdependence to build a strong, cohesive and supportive gay and lesbian community. The group meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month, and sessions typically begin with a speaker on a topic of general interest, and conclude with an interactive segment to meet others in the group. Remember to bring lots of business cards for registration and interaction.

ADventurers Like US (ADLUS)
Started by a group of gay adventurers to encourage and network with other GLBT adventurers in June 1999, the group now boasts more than 500 members who meet regularly for various sports and outdoor activities from badminton and swimming to camping, windsurfing and scuba diving, just to mention a few of their activities. Adlus will also be sending a volleyball team off to the 2002 Gay Games in Sydney.

HeartLand
HeartLand is a non-sectorian Gay Buddhist Fellowship group based in Singapore. The group also welcomes gay people who just started out as Buddhist or who are of other religions, but like to know more about Buddhism. They meet every Monday and Thursday to meditate.

MAW organises social, sports, recreational and cultural activities for its group of mostly gay male members in Singapore. The group meets weekly on Sundays at Yishun Safra to rockclimb, swim, play tennis and for lunch on Wednesdays in the Orchard and Raffles Place areas. Other activities include a monthly movie outing, male social dance workshop and beach volleyball.

The group also runs a counselling service, The Looking Glass, to provide confidential and anonymous counselling, information and support via email. Members also meet on it's chat channel of the same name on the Galaxynet server of Internet Relay Chat (IRC).
