US teacher crowned Mr Gay Hong Kong 2013

Michael Morrill, an American who has been living in Asia for 10 years, was announced as the winner of the 2013 Mr Gay Hong Kong competition held at Armani Prive on Saturday night.

Hong Kong's gay community has a new ambassador and he's Michael Morrill, a 35-year-old American and Hong Kong resident who teaches English to schoolchildren, and has extensive experience in volunteering from Green rooftop gardening and poverty reduction, according to a press release.

Mr Gay Hong Kong 2013: Michael Morrill

He beat four other finalists to win the honour to represent Hong Kong at the 2014 Mr Gay World finals in Rome, Italy.

As the winner, he will take stewardship of the Tongzhi Tsai (Junior Tongzhi) campaign which aims to address homophobic bullying in schools. Morrill, who is himself HIV-positive, will also become become a Red Ribbons Ambassador for AIDS Concern, and promote HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

James Gannaban, executive producer of Mr Gay Hong Kong, told Fridae that Morrill's nationality is a non-issue. "He has dedicated almost a third of his life helping to educate our youth. He campaigned on a powerful platform, raising awareness about the plight of, and the social inequalities faced by, people living with HIV – being one, himself. We have every confidence in his ability to represent Hong Kong well."

Last year's Mr Gay Hong Kong winner Benjie Caraig, who went on to win the first runner-up prize at the Mr Gay World 2013 in Antwerp, Belgium in August, is Filipino while Rick Twombley, the first Mr Gay Hong Kong winner in 2009, is also American. To participate in the contest, one must be a self-professed gay man, above 18 years of age and hold a valid Hong Kong ID card.

Mr Gay Hong Kong is held in conjunction with Pink Season which spans over two months from September 12 to November 10, 2013.

White Guy Wins Mr HK Again Shock.

I think I'll take a punt at it next year; The White Guy seems to do well in *this* contest (during its short life, to date), such as it is...

most UNinteresting gay HK contest.. how can US teacher become Mr. HK >he is old and just anybody in USA ; just gay and so not nice looking; no good body.. just damaged the HK male image; Singapore has a better image of A&F styled Mr. Singapore.... HK is lousy..Quit this contest if HK cannot find better competitiors!!!

"Old"?! Jesus. I'm almost 42 - should I climb into a museum case now, or wait til my birthday?

The *point* is that, statistically, This contest seems skewed to whatever Caucasian ends up in it. As super dumbbbbbb any such contest is - just as much as similar heterosexual contests are - and even while recognising that HK has many people, many races living there, and well, why shouldn't a white guy be Mr HK,if he lives there? - still, it fits a pattern that seems to be being set - whatever white guy ends up in the final with the other shy, retiring wallflower types will win. (I better not repeat the sharper comments I've heard from HKers about This win, here.)

It's not doing the contest any favours, put it that way.

Hear hear with the "old" comment, it's kind of vain and narcissistic to think that a 35 year old is "old", with that said, on my 30th birthday there's going to be a lot of tears!

@ vercoda, why bother waiting until your B-day, just offer yourself to the fossil record and have the scientist carbon date you!

"Mr Gay Hong Kong 2013" - Some gays follow the old blueprints for another pyramid. A different colour on the same structure. I used to think that difference in sexuality means defiance against the old order. It would now seem the old order has followers of a new colour.

Gay competition should be different from heterosexual competition.
That Gay competition is wise competition.
it will be possible that very old gay become the winner .

LBGT should realize that you all will become old, should we reject you when you will be old?

see the winner has extensive charity experience.
there should no racist in gay world because we are not religion community but love community.

it is not sexual attractive petition too. but this part can be certain percent.

again , this is not sex competition
