Japanese city looking to attract LGBT travelers

Nara, the ancient capital of Japan has announced that it will be earmarking funds to attract LGBT travellers from within the country and abroad.

Already a popular tourist destination, the city announced that it has allocated 2.08 million yen to attract LGBT travellers in its annual budget starting April 2016.

The city announced plans to join the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association. This will make it the first Japanese municipality to become a member.

The tourism board also plans to hold LGBT study sessions with people in the tourism sector, including restaurants and hotels.

Nara was Japan’s religious and political capital in the 8th century. Today its ancient temples and free-roaming tame deer make it one of the country’s most popular destinations for tourists.

the nara tourism board must be bonkers. just add a page to your web site saying you're gay friendly. that's all there is to it.

Of course its business for them and I'm not fooled by that at least they won't cause any problems for us visiting them.
Its the same for most gay friendly countries all about business.

¥2.08 million is indeed only around US$18,000. I applaud the gesture, but it's not going to be much more than that. Japan, though, is well worth visiting and at least two Tokyo wards (districts) have introduced LGBT partnerships.

But if you are going to gay friendly Asia, surely you have to visit Taiwan, the most gay friendly of all the countries? Most of the major cities have annual Gay Pride Parades. Taipei's last year had around 70,000 participants. I went for four consecutive years and was quite amazed at all the young people happy to proclaim their sexuality. I had a ball. My bet is that Taiwan will be the first Asia country to introduce gay marriage.

Juxtaposed with the wacko stories from indonesia we should give Nara credit though it's a long shot - that is six hours from tokyo.
