US airport worker fired for anti-gay message over PA system

The self-described prankster was fired after he admitted to blaring an anti-gay message over the public address system at a Fort Lauderdale airport.

Airport officials have fired a luggage attendant who admitted playing a Bible verse and a death threat over the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport public speaker system after a gay couple collecting their luggage heard the message and filed a complaint, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

Anthony Niedwiecki (right) and his partner of six years Waymon Hudson filed the complaint to airport officials shortly after they heard the message.
Jethro Monestime, 23, who had worked for Superior Aircraft Services - a contractor for the airport - acknowledged that he played the message twice early May 1 after he downloaded the message to his cellphone.

Monestime, who told investigators the message was intended as a prank, he used his cell phone to play a recording that said, "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, they should be put to death."

The announcement quoted from Leviticus 20:13, which, depending on the translation of the Bible, states that: "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death."

Monestime, who was described by co-workers as a devout Christian, said he was not aware a gay couple was in the airport terminal and said that was just a coincidence and had no ill intent.

Anthony Niedwiecki (right) and his partner of six years Waymon Hudson, who filed the complaint to airport officials shortly after they heard the message, didn't consider it a prank.

"It was a death threat," Niedwiecki said. "I appreciate the fact that police followed up on this."

Niedwiecki and Hudson filed the complaint to airport officials that started the investigation. He will not face criminal charges, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.

Danny Pyne, co-owner of Superior Aircraft, said Monestime was fired Monday, and the company had issued an apology to the couple.

Sometimes I wish Fridae could leave out some quotes in their articles especially when they are so hurtful.

How can a gay christian feel comfortable with their sexuality and their god they have to read such quotes written here??

If Fridae is a site to help gay people to come out, meet others and feel comfortable, then some of the news they publish is a bit damaging!!

I dunno whether anyone else sometimes wonders about this too??

Then the Pharisees, trying to test Jesus, brought a woman caught in adultery before Him, asking "Rabbi, what shall we do with this adulterous woman? The law of Moses commanded us that such should be stoned!"

Jesus continued to write on the ground in the temple, where He had been teaching.

As they continued to ask Him, He raised himself up and said "He who is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone." Then He bent down and resumed writing on the ground.

One by one, the Pharisees being convicted by their conscience departed, until there was not one left.

Jesus said to her "Where are the ones who accused you?"

She replied " No one, Lord" and Jesus said to her "Neither do I give judgement"

Well, i hope perhaps some fundamentalist will post a message asking heterosexual adulterous couples to be stoned to death, that doctors performing abortions be murdered (already in progress), and that absolutely, no way, should anyone do any work on the Sabbath (saturday), including manning the retail stores in the mall, or performing health services.

At least this way persecution is evenly and fairly distributed.

Hey Magdelene,

Give the whole picture ok....Jesus also told the adulterous woman "but leave your life of sin" after saying "neither do I give judgement"...

But using this passge (about adultery) on discussing about sexual orientation is another debatable issue and some may find it a misuse of text.

Of course it is hurtful to hear such quotes. But think: should a Muslim give up his/her faith just because of some terrorists killed people? If so, then his/her faith is just too weak.

What if Changi airport public speaker system gave an announcement, saying "Cursed and put to death to all who worship idols"? I think the airport will be closed down for few weeks...

Kel00, the reason in putting up such an article is perhaps to create an awareness that such discrimination exist even now. Maybe u can look on the brighter side that appropriate action has been taken against the luggage attendant.

does anyone see theobvious discrepancies in the english translations of the "bible"? If Jesus really said "neither do I give judgement", but in the next breath said, "but leave your life of sin"....those two comments are opposing to each other (as translated). If he judged her life to be one of sin, which she was instructed to leave, then Jesus DID bring JUDGEMENT on her lifestyle. The oft-quoted verses in Leviticus were also long-ago mis-translated from their original context. The entire English-version of the Bible is comprised of one mis-translated verse after another. The original "bible" wasn't written in English of course, but later translated by THOSE IN POWER at the time. THOSE IN POWER had their own political agendas. The English version of the bibile is simply an inaccurate/policitally-adjusted account of that period and the teachings of that time; and has long been used as a religious weapon to distribute and justify hate, persecution and murder hidden behind a thin veil of pseudo-love. Religions are man-made dogmas and rituals designed to control people through the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) use of fear...fear of death, fear of going to hell, fear of being alone, left without hope extricated, etc. Dogmas and rituals laced with just enough truths (supposed truths) to lend them credibility and prevent their demise. All man-made religions are falsities..they contain just enough plausibilities to capture many humans' faith and following. There IS a "god", a universal force, but he's not a lonely grey-bearded man sitting somewhere in space, who dictates the behavior, thoughts or loyalty of the humans who live on planet earth.

Well, if anything, thank God for the good sense of management @ Superior AIrcraft. That guy must be retarded to really think that any message he plays over a PUBLIC address system's meant as a joke, no? To who- the airport visitors??? ROFLMAO
Singlehandedly, he almost ruined the professionalism & dignity of Ford Launderdale.
