actor dropped from grey's anatomy for using anti-gay slur

Five months after creating a furor with his use of an anti-gay slur against a fellow castmate, actor Isaiah Washington will not return for the show's fourth season.

Grey's Anatomy co-star Isaiah Washington has been dropped from the hit US medical drama after he made headlines last October for calling co-star T.R. Knight a "faggot" on set, a move which, in turn, forced Knight to publicly declare himself gay.

At the Golden Globe awards in January, where Grey's was named top television drama, Washington caused further uproar when he repeatedly used the slur backstage - after denying he had ever used the word in the first place.

He later apologised for his actions, met with officials from the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and filmed a public service announcement in which he said "words have power" to hurt or heal.

And at the end of season three his character, Dr Preston Burke, was seen packing his bags on the cliffhanger finale.

According to series producer ABC Television Studios, his contract has not been renewed.

The actor's spokesperson Howard Bragman confirmed his client had received a call from the show's creator Shonda Rimes on June 7 informing the actor that he was "not invited back to the show next season," and the 43-year-old star Friday released a statement addressing the situation.

"I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore," he said in the statement.

Meanwhile, Grey's co-star and Golden Globe-winning Korean-Canadian actress Sandra Oh will host the June 23 season finale of CBC Radio One's Go, titled The Gayest Music of All Time in honour of Gay Pride weekend across North America.

too bad...I like Grey's Anatomy, and Dr. Preston Burke's character. On the show he's a superior, world-class, talented cardiothoracic surgeon with an ego that wouldn't fit into the Super Dome. He shouldn't be fired for calling his co-star a faggot... I think we (gays) should be MORE forgiving and MORE tolerant of hateful behavior exhibited by our heterosexual brothers and sisters....forgive the guy for his shameful behavior off-screen, and let him make a living as an actor!!!

But if this is tolerated, then the pace towards equality will be slowed down. I think there should be a limit regarding the hateful behavior of heterosexuals. If a guy uses shameful words on women, shouldn't the women retaliate? If someone uses shameful words on races and religions, shouldn't he/she reflect on what he/she has done which may hurt someone out there in the world?

well if t.r. knight used the n word repeatedly, the consequences should be the same. Isaiah Washington should be mad alright...at himself! :)

I agree that firing him might not have been the answer. It's more important that people be held accountable for their errors, apologize, change for the better and show willingness to become more tolerant/accepting and critical of their own bigotry. Firing someone only creates more resentment, less discussion.

thats why ..people only feel it when others discriminate against them ..but they totally forgot about it when it is their turn to discriminate ...so we call those people hypocrite ( in malay language there is a saying "kuman seberang laut nampak, gajah di tepi bibir tak nampak - literally means " a bakteria across the sea you can see, but an elephant beside your cheek you didnt see" which means its easier to point out people's fault and his own )

but to call him "N@#ger 3x" is uncalled for because this will only lump us in the same untouchable category as him ..."an eye for an eye and the whole world will be blind ! "
