Guangzhou gays protest police action at local park

More than 100 gay men in Guangzhou clashed with police last Tuesday in People's Park.

The state-run English-language China Daily newspaper on Saturday that a group of over a 100 gay men confronted the police last Tuesday after the police asked a “large” group of homosexuals to leave Renmin Gongyuan (People's Park/广州人民公园). The police action was the latest in a series of similar incidents of asking gay men to leave the park that is known to be a cruising spot.

Some 110 men were arrested in two raids in March and April this year.

"The park is open for everyone," Ah Qiang, a volunteer of a Guangzhou-based gay organiaation was quoted as saying. "Why are we not allowed to stay here?"

The report quoted an unnamed police officer with the Guangwei subdistrict public security station who said the move to ask homosexuals to leave the park was a preventive measure because gay men are allegedly committing crimes such as robbery and theft in the park.

Ah Qiang, who frequently conducts a safe sex outreach programme with a group of 30 volunteers at the park, refuted the claim saying that the men were in fact the victims and not the perpetrators of crimes.

He said the men managed to stand their ground and got the police to leave the park instead.

It's like Stonewall. It may well be a seminal moment for the Chinese gay community. Kind of makes you proud of them, doesn't it?

China may "fuel" the world economy simply cos they are so far back behind with their pent up demands from all their past communism ideology; but one thing is sure, they will certainly NOT lead the world in many areas.

They block access to; YouTube, Blogspot, iTunes, UN News....etc (many are still blocked and unblocked as and when it happens). Pure insecurity. Since Truth liberates,it is therefore vital to keep its citizens under chains for continual power and control.

If religious fundamentalism takes hold of China, worse days will come. Let's hope, like the Tianamen Square incident, the people there are more resilient than to allow an easy walk over bullying.

Bravo to these brave men in the park.

It is a sad day when people with noble intentions are instead discriminated and branded as the perpetrators of crime.

while the police went away, you can be sure that they won't stay away. i applaud the courage of those who stood their ground and refused to be intimidated into leaving. it is moments like these that further the cause of gay rights around the world.

Well we all know what gay men get up to in parks. I'm as gay as u come, but I really don't want to see guys having sex in the bushes. They SHOULD be moved on!

I think the matter should be understood clearer. Gay are like other park users shouldnt be driven off. Who are the robberies need investigate for the safety all park users. Having sex in the party is point I like to argue. Not that I support having sex in the park. First, gay or straight have sex in parks, cars, beaches... so its not just gay. Second, why do people have sex in public needs further understanding; for the thrill, convenient, financial difficult checking into brothels, staying with families so nowhere to turn to...? So, lets not jump the gun. However, I applaud the courage of these gays. Remember the Japanese occupation days (though not mine) where sign boards were erected, "Dogs and Chinese are not allowed into the park".

Adding on to my comment...

If I go to the park to socialize, to meet friends, to make friends, why should I be driven out of the park when some gay people make love in bushes.

There are always straight people making love in park. So are the polices going to drive away all straight park users. No, in fact, the polices arrest any peeping toms so that straights can have a safe and merry park f..k... time.

There 2 matters here. First, there is no right driving awar gay users in park. Not all gays use park for convenient sex. Dont believe straight sex in park, go see for yourself. Ive seen in many occasions while jogging early evening in parks. Go see for yourself, dont even have to peep, if you are not worry being bashed by them.

Two, gays having sex in park which I do not encourage. However, the point is why gays have in parks? Understanding the poblems would be able to resolve the problems, hopefully. Drive away gay sex in park is driving away problems. So, instead of gathering in park, gays are driven to more private gatherings and ended in more group sex and that is morale? Driving away gays from park is not fair to gays who are using park for descent purposes. This have ended in confrontation, extortions, robberies and perhaps even violent.

Not everybody is fortunate to have understanding friends, relatives, wives and parents that see one openingly in gay coffee shops. Neither is about 40 bucks cheap motels is going to solve the problems. And driving away gays from park is a ridiculous solution.
