Elton John and David Furnish now parents of baby boy

It's a boy – birthed by a surrogate on Christmas Day – for superstar Elton John and his filmmaker partner David Furnish!

Sir Elton John and his civil partner David Furnish, who joined in a civil partnership after a 12-year relationship, welcomed Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John who was born to a surrogate in California on Christmas Day, according to Us Weekly.

“We are overwhelmed with happiness and joy at this very special moment,” the pair told the magazine about their 7-pound, 15-ounce infant. “Zachary is healthy and doing really well, and we are very proud and happy parents.”

It was not revealed who the biological father was, or the identity of the surrogate mother.

Last year, the couple tried unsuccessfully to adopt a 14-month-old HIV-positive orphan in Ukraine, but were denied by government officials who said John, 63, was too old and that his partnership with Furnish, 48, was not recognised in their country.

Changes to British law earlier this year, however made it possible for the first time for two men to be named as parents on a child’s birth certificate.

They join a growing list of gay celebrity fathers including Ricky Martin, Neil Patrick Harris and longtime partner David Burtka, Clay Aiken, and B.D. Wong and longtime partner Richie Jackson.

thank God its about time, but I think his biggest regret will be that he didn't do it sooner

he's 62 which will be a challenge, but I am sure its worth waiting for

but good luck when its kindergarten athlectics day and you have to compete in the sport races against the other younger dads and even more so against those single out of wedlock teenage mothers like Bristol Palin (actually the girl has spunk)

everyone should have kids, I think Chinese parents are cutting out this newpaper clipping and putting it on the fridge for all their gay offspring to see and drop a hint, cause continuing the family linage is so important and it all doesnt have to stop just cause you like same sex partners, technology enablers are everywhere

Can Elton hold that temper of his when that baby starts crying?LOL

Then again the baby would be at the other end of his house with a Nanny.......

Elton has no business having a child at his age. At his age, and in his health, he will be lucky if he lives to see the child become a teenager. Further, him and his partner using a surrogate to have a baby does nothing to help the cause for gay rights. People will just see this as a celebrity's trivial pursuit of the ultimate fashion accessory. He would have been better off just getting a dog and calling it a day.

Elton looks like a 70 year old woman, I find it obscene that this kid will probably only have one parent by the time he is in grade school.

There is a reason why menopause hits women around age 50, it's natures way of telling you that you are too old to have kids.

Elton has always impressed me as a spoiled child throwing temper tantrums and name calling when the going gets rough.

jeeez what next silly old elton gets to play 'mommy' the poor kid will be in competition to throw tantrums, I can't help agreeing kids should have younger parents who can keep up with them and are around for them in their 20's and goddess willing to be useful grandparents, silly old rockers like rod stewart, older woman having fertility treatments at 60+ ridiculous now old pop queens paying for designer babies, it's not like collecting antiques or Louis Philippe era wigs elton rearing smart functional kids is a serious commitment, it's hard not being disparaging some times I hope it works out for the kids sake and it doesn't end up like hollowhood celebrity kids addicted by 12yrs, I wonder if Hugh Hefner the old playboy will still have it in him to knock up his 'child bride'..oh gross the idea of it, imagine though having a hot young daddy like Ricky Martin grrrrrrrrrrrrrr hehe you'd want to grow up gay

While I think that there are some gay couples that would be excellent parents I don't think Elton falls in to this category. First of all is at an age where he should be thinking about funeral arrangements and I don't trust his much younger gold digger boyfriend to be there for the kid after Elton has a vapor lock.

Money buys you anything these days except common sense.

Anyone knows if this kind of arrangment is available in Malaysia or Singapore? There should be no stopping two loving partners, gay or straight from becoming parents to a being at whatever age they decided to and..nothing is too late in queer world. Best wishes, Sir Elton & partner!

Comrade_Fight says "nothing is too late in queer world" thats so true and further illustrates that the small but vocal "queer identifying' collection of Homosexual men live a decayed philosphy and lifestyle having no clue no objective boundaries no ethics and no self dicipline or common sence,
