Anti-gay laws come into effect in Indonesia’s Aceh province

Gay sex in the region to be punishable by 100 strokes of the cane.

A strictly Muslim, and increasingly conservative, province in Indonesia has enacted a law punishing gay sex between Muslims.

The province is the only one in the country that is allowed to implement Sharia law. Gay sex is not illegal in the rest of Indonesia, though it remains a predominantly Muslim, and conservative, country.

The law, passed in 2014 but only now being enforced, forbids same-sex relations between men or women.

"The law is to safeguard human dignity. It is to protect Aceh's Muslims from committing immoral acts," provincial Sharia chief Syahrizal Abbas told the AFP news agency.

The enactment of the law has bought dismay from global and local LGBT rights groups. Ismail Hasani, from human rights group the Setara Institute for Democracy and Peace, criticised the law as "cruel, inhumane and against the constitution,” according to the BBC.

Under the new laws, adultery also carries a possible penalty of 100 strokes. Those who accuse someone of adultery without proof could themselves face 80 lashes.

Hi guys, I am really feeling for our "LGTB " brothers & sisters in ACEH. It may be necessary to help some people get away from ACEH . Also put human rights situation for all people in ACEH to the central Government . You guys living in Indo know best, and "FRIDAE" could help with Gay Nusantara as well to build support and raise awareness for Human rights. Much love & joy to you . Umigo

Sharia Law is out of touch with modern times.
Here in Canada we don't allow Sharia Law thats why we are leaders here for Gay Marriage and Acceptance.
Also Sharia Chief Syahrizal Abbas should be banned from entering Canada!

These self appointed admistrators of the "law" make me sick ! Notice the coward administering the cane has their face covered ! Maybe too afraid for their own life from those who understand fairness and the concept of live and let live? Draconian, outdated and pathetic ! Won't be traveling to ACEH for a LONG, long time !

Aceh is the only place in Indo that I would never want to visit. The lashes and strokes laws is not new, it's had always been like that. Same-sex relationship, kissing/intimate in public, non married relationship, all of them will be punished in public. Who knows what will come next after the tsunami.

It's a shame.... The UN shall have make it clear that being homosexual is just as normal as being heterosexual... And it is anti-human rights to pass any laws to punish someone because of his or her sexual orientation.

Leave them to it. It only applies to those that follow islam in that region.

If you're a follower how would they find out you've had bum sex anyway? And if they did, just say youre not a Muslim.

You have to be complicit for sharia to be enforced.

It's an open admission that there is no God. Wake up.

This sickening religion with its Medieval laws and the political correct apologists. Where are the world leaders strong enough to ban this hideous religion from our democratic, liberated countries? Islam: the biggest threat to Western democracy and human rights since the 2nd World War and yet we still pander to it. Couldn't be anything to do with oil could it? What am I saying!? What a ludicrous suggestion!
