Half of gay Chinese reluctant to come out

Over half of gay men in China do not think they will come out in the next five years according to a survey.

About 55 per cent of gay and bisexual men in China as well as 49 per cent of lesbian and bisexual women said they were not likely to come out over the next five years, a survey conducted by gay networking app Blued revealed.
The survey questioned close to 17,000 LGBT in China and found 39 per cent of lesbians planned to come out in the next five years, compared to only 23 per cent of gay men.
Around 75 per cent of respondents said that family worries kept them in the closet while 61 per cent mentioned public perception.
The survey also revealed the location of China’s LGBT population—22 per cent of gay men and 19 per cent of lesbians live in major metropolises such as Beijing and Shanghai.
Around 70 per cent of LGBT respondents said they live in second-tier cities and eight per cent of gay men and nine per cent of lesbians live in towns and villages.
The poll found 91 percent of gay and bisexual men and 96 percent of lesbian and bisexual women do not have a child and that about 54 percent of gay and 65 percent of lesbian respondents would like to get married.

Maybe they think being gay doesnt completely define who they are. Whereas as there are plenty of professional homosexuals that massively skew public perception.

And these celebrity gays are disproportionately backed by 'activist' groups thus preventing the progress they purport to be hindered in making. Perhaps.

Tradition and culture is what keeps them in the closet. Yes, times are changing here in China and they are changing very quickly. As the younger generations are accepting, they are influenced by the older generation. The tradition of marriage and fostering children is still very important to the older generation. I think that as more and more younger people are educated in universities where acceptance is high and the older generations dies off, we will see a continued rise of acceptance. It will just take time and They do not have religious issues to deal with and their government seems to take a neutral or slightly leaning to acceptance position. With all that said, they seem to be more bisexual in their life than homosexual. Many of the gay men I know say they want children. So, they are willing to continue the norm of getting married, have a family and then having a side "friend with benefits". This is very common and acceptable in the culture currently. They remain closeted, yet they achieve the best of both world.

4, the 'activists' will be livid to hear that!!! How dare they identify as gay and not conform to the western stereotypes!!

And gradual change that doesn't upset people in large numbers to allow a head to head battle??!! It's the world gone mad! :)
