LGBT couples in Taiwan to celebrate marriage equality with massive banquet

The day after same-sex marriage must be legalised, couples plan to hold a 1,000-person banquet outside the presidential office.

LGBT couples in Taiwan are planning a massive wedding banquet to celebrate marriage equality next month. Same-sex marriage will become legal in Taiwan on 24 May, according to a 2017 Constitutional Court ruling.

Taiwan’s Parliament is currently debating two bills to legislate in accordance with the ruling and a local LGBT rights organisation is organising a grand traditional wedding banquet outside the presidential palace in the capital Taipei on 25 May to celebrate this significant moment, with the invitation saying that ‘we invite everyone to join us in welcoming new pages in Taiwan’s history’.

It would be very difficult to imagine the local Taiwanese LGBTQI community enjoying the fruits of this hard earned win under the one China rule if the mainland was to have its way with Taiwan. Well done to the local legislature and community groups who have made it happen.
