Nigel Collett reviews Island of Demons, a fictional account of the life of Walter Spies, a gay Russian-born German artist, choreographer, musician and natural historian, who moved to Yogyakarta and later Bali where he had left a profound influence on local painters and the evolution of the modern ketjak dance before he was arrested as part of a crackdown on homosexuals in 1938.
