1st LGBT pride festival in Shanghai, Jun 7-14

Although it will not feature a parade, organisers have planned a smorgasbord of social events from film screenings to drag performances to sports competitions before culminating in Pride Day - an all-day, all-night event on Saturday, Jun 13, with an all-day BBQ, fashion show, games and a 'hot bod' contest.

Shanghai - the largest city in China - will have its first LGBT pride festival from Jun 7-14. Organisers say they see the event as a way to "celebrate the diversity and future of Shanghai Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, and Queer community" and "celebrate the diversity and talent of the people who make up the Shanghai LGBT scene."

The event is organised by ShanghaiLGBT, a social group and email list with over 1000 members, and is run by eight moderators.

Organiser Hannah Miller told Fridae the event came about at a brainstorming session with ShanghaiLGBT moderators. "We plan about four events a month and decided last year to try this year to organise a gay pride festival." She said she founded the group in 2006 as she felt the city at the time "lacked social network for queer members of the community that were open and available to everyone."

"I wanted Shanghai to have a group that let everyone know they were welcome and that Shanghai has an inviting, fun LGBT scene. Since then the queer nightlife and social scene has grown significantly in Shanghai." Said the 30-year-old American, who teaches science at an international school. She has lived in China since 2001 and been in Shanghai for five years.

"We're still no San Francisco or Paris, but the changes I've seen in the past three years have been great. I think Shanghai has a very pink future!"

Shanghai, the largest city in the country, is home to more than 20 million people.

Nice that you told us this sooo far in advance...
We will now all run to the nearest travel agent and book a flight and hotel to make sure that we wont miss the opening in 2 days.
You really made sure that this one stays a 'local event' ... anyhow, why would you bother...it's not in Singapore....

Congratulations to all the moderators who took the risk to plan such an event for Shanghai people. Don't compare your festival to others just do your best for yourselves with what you have, enjoy it totally and know that you are beginning an event that will one day celebrate a 5, 10 25, 50 year anniversary thanks to you. The hardest step is the first one. Have a great time.

sorry to have to stray, but Digi (Malaysian mobile operator) is organising Love To Save campaign ... by just joining, a charity of your choice (we are primarily rooting for Malaysian AIDS Foundation) will get RM 5 per participation ... do consider! much thanks!

Speaking as one of the organisers here: The lateness of this article on this site has less to do with Fridae's unwillingness to spread the word earlier and more to do with our tardiness in reaching out to media outlets like Fridae. Fridae has been nothing but wonderful in their support of what we do =)

I applaud Hannah Miller for organizing Shanghai's 1st LGBT pride festival! Considering the political climate of China, this must be seen as a huge breakthrough in China's LGBT rights, which has been a top concern of many gay-friendly social workers and scholars since the early 1990's. The first AIDS hotline started in Beijing in 1992, and China's first semi-open event for the gay community, the "Gay Salon," was held regularly over the same year in Beijing but after the fifth event in 1993, homophobic authorities ordered its closure. Despite its early demise, the movement had garnered widespread publicity and left a great impact on the society as a whole. With 1.4 billion population, China must have the largest LGBT population yet in the world. If only 2% of the population is gay/bisexual men according to conservative estimates, then China can easily have 28 million gay/bi men at the very least. Nature has its way of curbing the explosive population growth it seems!

Shanghai's gay scene is thriving, part of it aided by the influx of gay men from Hong Kong as I have observed on my visit there in 2006. I wish Shanghai a very pink future indeed!

Congratulations! It's a good start. And it's better to be modest and quite discreet for the first one, and then be bigger and bigger every year than to do something mega huge and judged provocative by the authorities and then nothing anymore. Step by step, Shanghai Pride will be one of the best pride in the world. I LOVE THIS CITY!!!
14. 2009-06-11 17:57
wow! now being more proud of China, more and more open things are gonna be shown off there, although this is the first one, but ya know! best for u and best for Chinese ppl! xoxo

Congratulations Shanghai and I hope there'll be more and more stuff like this in everywhere around China ^^

GOOD LUCK!

"celebrate the diversity and future of Shanghai Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, and Queer community" 'queer' is an irrelevant term here, it's an adopted slur term that covers gay lesbian etc. any way, it's also NOT a reference most GLBT people would choose to self label but one unfashionably foisted on us by the skanky one dimensional professional homosexual 'queering lobby'
