Brunei enacts first phase of law that will stone to death gay people

The Sultan of Brunei of has decreed into law the strict Islamic Sharia penal code that will eventually lead to death by stoning for crimes of a sexual nature, including those of same-sex relations.

The Sultan of Brunei of has decreed into law the strict Islamic Sharia penal code that will eventually lead to death by stoning for crimes of a sexual nature, including those of same-sex relations.
“I place my faith in and am grateful to Allah the almighty to announce that tomorrow Thursday May 1, 2014 will see the enforcement of Sharia law phase one, to be followed by the other phases,” said Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, the absolute ruler of the tiny  Southeast Asian kingdom.
“The decision to implement the (Sharia penal code) is not for fun but is to obey Allah’s command as written in the Quran,” media reported the 67-year-old monarch as saying.
Starting May 1 Brunei citizens can be fined or jailed by Islamic courts for offences such as not performing Friday prayers, pregnancy out of wedlock, propagating other religions and indecent behavior. This constitutes the first phase of the law.
A second phase of punishing those who steal or consume alcohol with whipping and amputation of limbs will come into effect after a year.
The third phase of stoning to death as the specific method of execution for crimes of a sexual nature, will take effect within two years. This includes rape, adultery, sodomy, consensual same-sex relations and extramarital sexual relations for Muslims.
Same-sex relations have long been a crime in Brunei, but the maximum punishment till now has been a 10-year prison sentence.
Insulting the prophet Mohammed or any verses of the Qur’an, blasphemy, declaring oneself a prophet or non-Muslim, will also be punished with death by stoning.
The law will also apply to non-Muslims.
Almost three-quarters of those who live in Brunei are Muslims, the rest being Buddhists, Christians and those following  indigenous animism.  There are also some 30,000 mostly Catholic Filipino migrant workers.
World organizations were quick to condemn the Brunei’s promulgation of Sharia law.
The United Nations human rights office said it was “deeply concerned” about the new law and the death penalty for such a broad range of offences contravenes basic international law.
Amnesty International said Brunei’s new laws will introduce stoning to death for acts that should not even be considered crimes.
The US-based Human Rights Campaign that promotes equality rights for the LGBT community condemned the law as “draconian,” saying that death by stoning for same-sex relations was “horrific and sickening.”
Muslim-majority Brunei gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1984 and has kept close ties with its former colonial master. About 1,000 British troops guard the sultan’s palace.
A spokesman for the British Foreign Office said it was concerned about Brunei’s decision to introduce Sharia law, media reported

I hope that the world takes notice of this brutal concept of religion and acts upon it. If the world can react to Russia for it's aggression, perhaps the world will react to this idiocy.

If you are a Facebook user, please post your support for the LGBTI community in Brunei and for all those who are oppressed in that country on the Boycott Brunei Facebook page. The page was created directly in response to the implementation of the first phase of the new code and the impending phases to follow in the next few years. It aims to draw attention to what is happening in Brunei and to encourage people to take a stand. www.facebook.com/boycottbrunei

Such a backwards idea. This country is full of wealth with tiny brain and hatefulness towards anyone and anything deemed as an infidel to Allah. Sharia is making the world view Islam as a savage and primitive faith.
7. 2014-05-05 23:46
If, indeed, the United Kingdom has strong ties to Brunei then they are in a great position to help stop this horrific act of injustice. They could and should use the leverage they have with Brunei to push for a more modern approach to these draconian laws. Or is the United Kingdom "blind" because of the oil and gas wealth? To blind to do the right thing? We can only hope the pressure builds and Brunei backs down from this human injustice.

We should pull our troops out, immediately. Here in England LGBT can marry and no one cares. Barbaric and backward to stone anyone for anything.
9. 2014-05-06 01:00
I hope someone assassinates him and soon.

The British, with their troops at the palace are in the ideal situation of being able to rectify their historical mistake and get rid of him. It would only take them a few minutes to get rid of him if they had the will to do so.
10. 2014-05-06 04:14
congrats for bringing your whole country to stone age, Sultan.

Now Malaysia has something to look up to. Save us from Gods.

Stuff Sharia Law and stuff those who practice it. I am so over Islamic governments ordering people around in the name of Allah. Where is democracy? Thank God I live in a civilised, secular country (NZ) where gay marriage is legal for those who want it and there is equality for gay people. Islamic people who believe in democracy will hopefully overthrow despots such as the Idiot of Brunei. I have a gay friend in Brunei and hopefully he will now leave it and take his skills with him.

If you have followed the life of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah you must
realize that he, the ruling family and relatives could be some of
the first subjected to the law. They are know for breaking every
rule in the law outside of Brunei. There has always been a group
of religious extremist in Brunei who have resented his view of
governing. According to my friends who we visited even way
back in 1985 this group was always giving him problems.
Hopefully his passing the law is just a ploy to keep power until
he can get an upper hand on the situation and then quietly do
away with it. If he doesn't do it quick, a lot of the Royal family
could be in for some sticks and stones. Stupid people make
stupid laws even in 2014=sad
06MAY14.... Well, it seems that many people have now heard of what is going on in Brunei. The internet is buzzing about a boycott of the Dorchester Hotel chain which the Sultan owns. The Beverly Hills Hotel and The Bel-Air Hotel in Los Angels are but a few in the group.
Now, a lot of the Hollywood stars are coming out
against the law and boycotting the hotels. Even
Facebook has a boycott page. Does the Sultan read any
of this? Probably not, but if it means a lose of
revenue $$$ maybe something will happen.

Re the comments about Britain having influence over Brunei, please think again. It is well known that the Sultan came to Britain and Thatcher's rescue when the pound was crashing against the US$ in the 1980s. In 1980 £1 bought $2.42. By 1985 it was within a whisker of £1 = $1 and still falling. Thatcher turned to the Sultan, and soon sterling was on the way up again. Later there were questions in parliament about her son's business relations with the Sultan. Sadly Britain has been too much in the Sultan's debt to do much about new laws.

Within Brunei itself, as @usa_scorpion suggests, the Sultan has had to face some deeply embarrassing questions. From 1986 to 1997 his brother Prince Jefri was Minister of Finance as well as the owner of the Amedeo Development Corporation. In 1998 the latter collapsed with debts estimated at $2.8 billion. The Prince was also accused of mishandling funds of the Brunei Investment Agency. Unsurprisingly the matter was settled out of court! Under the new laws, presumably he would have been sentenced to whipping and amputation. Seems pretty petty when gays can be stoned to death.

Although Brunei has been ruled by a Sultanate for many centuries, its future is not guaranteed. Hence the perceived view not only that Islam is a guide and inspiration but that it is vital to the very basis of government legitimacy. But can anyone pinpoint the specific verse/s in the Qu'ran which mandate/s death by stoning for those engaging in homosexual acts? As I understand it, there is no such reference. It merely denounces homosexuality. Even the Bible goes further by advocating death (Leviticus 20:13). It is the Hadith, reports of what the Prophet Mohammed is alleged by third parties to have said, that Islamic scholars have used as the basis of Shari'a law.

Wherever the punishment comes from, it is utterly abhorrent. I hope everyone and every nation boycotts Brunei.

And Muslims wonder why the rest of us fear them, not because we may break their laws but because the punishments are so Barbaric !
Soon we will have un-educated girls, no women car drivers etc etc.
I wonder, is Islam so fearful of decline that it has to silence critics through law ?
I hope Allah brings to task all those who commit crimes against humanity in his name.
I have many Muslim friends and I fear for them.
16. 2014-05-06 19:33
Let's not forget that the vast majority of Muslim men and women, especially in Asia, are just the same as almost all others who believe in a form of organised religion. And like most, Islam has its own brand of extremists and fanatics. Sadly, much today is a relic of the carving up of various parts of the Islamic world by so-called enlightened western powers.

Let's also not forget that Christianity - more especially Christian greed and so-called Christian missionaries - has historically caused misery, mayhem and murder on a massive scale. The carving up of Central and South America by the papacy and the consequent massacre of entire races, slavery, the attempts by British merchants and their government to use vast quantities of opium as the currency with which to pay for Chinese goods (an action eagerly egged on by the missionaries sent out by the London Missionary Society who over some 3 decades had converted only a handful of souls - in dulling the mind, opium would bring huge numbers to God!), the various other evils and punishments inflicted upon so-called 'inferior' races - these and others can not be conveniently brushed under the carpet.

Yet 'civilised' society globally cannot stand still as the Muslim fanatics seem to demand. If Brunei wants the West's petro-dollars it should pay attention to the West's outrage at its actions. On the other hand, the West is seen to be powerless against the Taliban, in Syria, in influencing similar gay punishments in Nigeria, in the Ukraine . . . And is it any accident that most Islamic states are dictatorships or democracies masking virtual dictatorships?

Good to see that some international momentum is slowly building against Brunei's actions. The Sultan owns the Dorchester chain of luxury hotels which includes the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel where stars traditionally hang out. Ellen DeGeneris and Jay Leno are leading a boycott of the hotel. The CEO of the Dorchester chain has pathetically tried to sideswipe the protestors by saying, "There are other hotel companies in this city that are owned by Saudi Arabia... you know, your shirt probably comes from a country which has human rights issues."

Sir Richard Branson of the Virgin Group has tweeted that his employees and family would not stay at the luxury hotel chain "until the Sultan abides by basic human rights." And several major organisations which regularly use the hotel for large meetings have announced they will move to a different venue.

Well done Sultan for your bigoted oppressive views, pulling a developed country into the dark ages. I was planning on going there and using their airline, but I sure as won't be now. I just feel sad and very sorry for all those gay there under that barbaric regime.

you LGBT should inverstigate
based on Brunei character,
Did The sultan Bolkiah was person who fund/support all riots in the world?

We should saved all Brunei LGBT from that kind of Satan in Brunei.

The information on The Daily Beast article listed by @vintagescissors has fortunately been picked up by most of the major new agencies. Hopefully, everyone will now read it. Essentially, it tells the story of a young American Jillian Lauren who at age 18 found herself with about 40 other young women in the harem of Prince Jafri's brother. As she related to CNN, on one evening she was "loaned" out to the Sultan who was consuming alcohol and had sex with her. Apparently this is all contained in a book published some years ago and so it has not been suddenly dredged up for cash.

So if the law is to be obeyed, the first ones to be stoned to death must be the Sultan and his brother!!

Note: I am now unable to open that Daily Beast link. But it was repeated here -

22. Ritual of stoning is to drive out Satan
Prophet is not in earth anymore, He is in Heaven now. He had died
Those who possessed by died body is satanic and contain Satan inside.

So, The Sultan is deserve to get stoned till death because there is Satan inside ( spirit of Die people).

23. Oil from fossil / dead creature is satanic too.
When we used fossil energy, mean we use satan energy

24. Look at the building, That is place where people kneel and shout to The Almighty Allah the Greatest ( the name for satan).
The House of Allah or House of Satan in true word.
What will you do for such house of Satan?

There is also people who shout from that building, it is difficult to stop then in calling Satan (they called Allah the Greatest) because Satan is stuborn.

25. They want to go to Heaven but They still prefer to be on earth.
It mean that they are Lier.
punishment by cutting their tongue is for those Lier.

26. Stoning the sultan till death mean you help sultan to go to Beautiful Heaven, to meet prophets, because there is no prophets in our planet/earth.

27. God is in Heaven, and He got command to kneel Allah in Heaven.
So, Sending Sultan to the beautiful Heaven mean that you are obey Command of Allah.

28 so we should avoid in contact with Satan :

- reduce using oil and its derivation ( plastic, etc)
- do not step into Satanic Brunei Chain Hotel
- do not contact with any products from Brunei
- do not involve in any Brunei services
