Phantom of the Opera

Director: Joel Schumacher

Starring: Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, Patrick Wilson, Alan Cumming, Minnie Driver

Screening: 2004-12-21

Everything about this film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's
film is over — over-confident, over-baked, over-developed,
over-the-top, over-acted, over-exerted. But if that's how you like
your musicals — with big sets, big costumes, big hairdos —
then you won't be disappointed, even if the stars are kinda small.

Relative unknown Gerard Butler plays the title character of the
Phantom, a horribly disfigured musical genius hiding under the Paris
Opera House. Attracted to the beautiful young chorus singer Christine
(Emmy Rossum), he offers to give her singing lessons in secret and
groom her to become a top-notch soprano.

But when she breaks his heart by falling in love with a handsome
aristrocat, the sewers of hell break loose and chandeliers come
crashing down. This film version is directed by Joel Schumacher
(Batman And Robin, Phone Booth), who seems to
have some difficulty appreciating the meaning of the word "subtle".
