In this yet-another celebration of big girls, Queen Latifah plays
a hairstylist who saves all her money to open up a hair salon in
Atlanta. Jealous of her growing success, a gay rival hairdresser
(played hilariously by Kevin Bacon) tries to sabotage her business.
The plot is rather thin, we must say. But what gets this comedy
going are the very funny conversations that Queen Latifah makes
with her customers, which are rife with social commentaries from
weight issues to racism to Michael Jackson.
The movie pokes fun of gay people a lot. Kevin plays his role to
the hilt of flamboyance, while newcomer Bryce Wilson is also quite
hilarious playing a faggy hairdresser in Queen Latifah's shop.
If you're the kinda of queer who only watches films with queer
jokes and characters in it (anyone who caught the dreadful but gay-friendly
Miss Congeniality 2 would qualify), then this should be
your movie of the week.
