The Upside of Anger

Director: Mike Binder

Starring: Joan Allen, Kevin Costner, Erika Christensen, Evan Rachel Wood, Keri Russell, Alicia Witt, Mike Binder

Screening: 2005-06-21

Dykes may wish to know that this romantic comedy stars some terrific
young actresses in supporting roles, namely Keri Russell (of Felicity
fame), Alicia Witt (of Cybill fame), Erika Christensen
(Traffic) and Evan Rachel Wood (Thirteen).

They play the four daughters of the fine veteran actress Joan Allen
(The Ice Storm, Pleasantville) whose husband has
suddenly disappeared. Thinking he has left her and their daughters
for someone else, she starts an affair with her neighbour Kevin
Costner.

Unfortunately, though this comedy should be lauded for giving a
49-year-old actress top billing in a movie — very few Hollywood
movies do that — the movie is only mildly amusing. Joan is
fantastic, as always. But for a good comedy about a middle-aged
woman finding romance, Something's Gotta Give will give
you a better deal.
